    look at the numbers

    640×360 is a 16/9 ratio

    720×480 is 4/3, so needs non-squre pixels

  • 640×360 is 16/9 ratio, so i guess that’s working for you.

with the NTSC Anamorphic, in compressor you need to set the correct pixel aspect in the geometry pane of the inspector.
    choose NTSC Anamorphic.

if the SD 4/3 material is already incorporated with the HD 16/9 file, then this should work.

if you have separate SD 4/3 material that need to be pillar boxed in an NTSC Anamorphic file,
then when you put that though compressor use the above settings,
BUT ALSO set padding to 4/3

if you export the clips using quicktime conversion, the TC track will start at zero,
but you’d be transcoding, or re-compressing

quicker (by a matter of minutes, possibly seconds) than setting a bunch of sequences to TC0 would be to batch export your clips,
then bringing them back into FCP and changing the TC to zero.

first thing is that it may not be the sample rate that is the issue.

check your sequence presets in FCP (in A/V settings)
are they the same frame rate as your current project?
if not, that can cause audio drift.

to fix, check the correct sequence preset, & r-import the audio.
sometimes you have to import into a new project,
or change the file names before you import. (FCP “remembers” the files)

if it IS the sample rate, then the simplest solution could be to change your sequence settings to 44.1 rather than 48k

” in Premiere you can select only the audio or the video by holding OPT. Is there a similar function in FCP7?”

    yes.
weird you didn’t just try it!

    ALSO

Shift L will turn off timeline linking.
the result of this is that video & audio behave as if independent,
and in this mode, when you hold OPTION they behave as if linked, a reverse of the default situation.

such a simple thing should work,

so i’d jump to the simple fixes:
    – quit & re-open
    or
    – trash preferences

  • FCP has an issue with importing audio.
it can be affected by your sequence preset.

check what ever you have selected as a sequence pre-set is the same frame rate as your footage.
if not, adjust it, and re-import

apparently you my need to import into a new project as the original one can “remember” or “hang on to” the older frame rate when importing the same audio files
