I’ve seen the exact same issue which I briefly corresponded with Bouke about. I modified TC of a QT movie that was a Canon 7D shot file. The file was on an external drive formatted NTFS.

Changed the TC and the file went bust. Same symptoms as yours. Size shrunk, no longer opens in QT.

I accessed a backup of the file, copied to my Mac internal, and TC change went off OK.

I think modifying the time code of a QT movie when the file is not on a local and Mac formatted drive makes the file go corrupt. I need to do this test on networked and FAT32 formatted drives just to check of that is the issue.

In the past I’ve seen issues when one sets a networked drive as a capture scratch. When one captures, the files come out without TC, or are corrupt.

I seem to remember reading up about how on a network information travels as packets. So when you open or write a QT movie you open the data out of sequence and if the TC data doesn’t come in in the right sequence with picture data, the file structure gets altered enough to lose some data and all timecode.

Just a conjecture. More info needed.

Also, note that the render farm machines all need access to the media that’s being compressed. So you’ll need to mount that drive/s in all these machines.

I prefer to stripe time code using Bouke’s Qtchange utility. Then converting these ‘striped’ QTs to ProResHQ with Compressor. QTchange doesn’t care for the folder structure unlike Canon’s plugin, and it allows you to set TC the way you want.

In the case of 23.98 fps movies destined for integrating with film or other 24fps sources, we conform them to 24 with CinemaTools before striping TC.

I’ve observed this in FCP 6.0.x. With an HD 1080p24 ProRes sequence with subtitles. It would jump in brightness in this sections that subtitles. Strangely, the exported QT showed these artifacts within QT Player on the Mac screen. But the same expiated QT when imported back into FCP nd played out as video in a timeline out through a Blackmagic Multibridge, it was clean.

Could be wrong but I haven’t seen this in FCP 7.0.2

Subtitle mechanics is an involved activity. I would recommend you spend time studying the task at hand before embarking on any trials or making commitments.

I do a fair bit of subtitle stuff with DVDs in India. So I know what it takes.

In this area, I can think of no better experts than Andreas Kiel and Bouke Vahl. So my advice is to just hand it over to Bouke and he’ll do it for you.

How are you checking if the movie has an alpha or not?
I just did a trial exactly as you did. Even reimported the Animation millions colors+ movie back into FCP and it showed alpha.

In the FLV export dialog box too I could see a white background where alpha exists. When I exported the FLV is opens with a black background. So how does one check if there is an alpha or not?

I could upload my movie to you to check.

I wrote the post and typed the XML tags which vanished when I posted.
You will have to type the tags as they appear in the picture, or copy and paste them from the XML file in the Search and Replace window.

You can make an XML of your sequence. Then open that in Text edit and do a ‘Save as’ with another name.
Then search for a tag that is
20
where 20 is your font size.

Do a search and replace to
24
Assuming you want it to be 24 now.

Mind that you have to unsure that the value tag is for font size not some basic motion value.

Replace all tags and save the XML.

Import in FCP and you have a new sequence with font size changed dorm 20 to 24.

If you have FCP 7.0.2 then the XML import will lose all line breaks. This is a bug.

You have to export from FCP. cinema Tools can only make cut lists, not EDLs. At least not for PAL 24@25 projects.

You can place a widescreen mask on a clip by…
placing a slug on a higher layer
applying a ‘Mask Shape’ filter on the slug
set the shape to rectangle
adjust horizontal 100%
adjust vertical while looking at the existing widescreen
set mask shape to invert
Remove the widescreen filter from the clip on V1.

So now you have the mask s a higher layer. And you can freely scale, rotate or pan the clip and the mask will not change.
