exporting an edl from a 24fps project for neg cut

I am editing a film that was shot at 24fps and then telecined at 25fps onto digibeta. The lab provided me with flex files which I imported into Cinema Tools and then exported a batchlist which I imported into FCP. I then batchcaptured the footage into FCP and then conformed it to 24fps within FCP.
I have edited the 24fps footage on a 24fps timeline and now I need to export an edl for the neg cutter. He has asked for a 25fps edl.
When I export a straight cmx3600 edl from my timeline the source timecodes do not match the bitc timecode on the rushes or the clip timecodes in FCP. They are out by several seconds. The sequence timecodes are correct.
Has anyone been in a similar situation and able to give me advice? I assume there must be a way to export an accurate edl from this 24fps sequence?

I have edited at 24fps with 24@25 footage, but I did not have to use flex files and cinema tools so my advice may be inaccurate for that workflow.
But the problem you are experiencing seems to me to be related to how FCP handles mixed TC rates (sequence at 24 with 24@25 footage) so try this:
Make a duplicate of your sequence just to be safe…
In the browser rightclick on the column headings and enable the TC Rate column.
Check the TC rate of your source footage. (It should be 24@25.)
Check what the TC rate of your sequence is. It should be 24 or 24@25.
If the sequence TC Rate is 24 rightclick on the “24” and change it to 24@25. This will change the IN and OUT times in your sequence and the total duration will be 4% shorter as the timeline’s timecode rate now is at 25fps. Export a new EDL and see if the source timecodes are correct (and that the new sequence timecodes match the new timecodes in the sequence).
If the sequence timecode already is 24@25 try changing it to 24 and Export an EDL.

yes, Stephan is right,
all used clips and all sequences must have a TC Rate of 24@25.
to be sure you are targeting all clips when you change TC Rate in the browser column you can do this:
copy your final edited sequence/s into a new project.
select the sequences and got to the Tools Menu > Create Master clips.you’ll get a new bin containing ALL the clips used in the edit.
now you can change the TC rate on the sequences and clips.i’m saying you HAVE to go about it this way.
you may have all your clips already in your edit project.
but some people keep their rushes in one project, and their sequences in another.nick

Hi, just have another quick question with regards to this process. Should I be exporting an edl direct from FCP or should I be going via Cinema Tools?

I would do it from Final Cut. (But as I mentioned I have never used the Cinema Tools workflow…)

You have to export from FCP. cinema Tools can only make cut lists, not EDLs. At least not for PAL 24@25 projects.

Hi, just wanted to feed back…
I’m back in the cutting room today and have managed to export accurate EDLs by following your advice. I changed my sequence settings to 24@25 and that has solved the problem.
