that project file may be corrupt.
Have you tried a different project file, from the Autosave Vault?
(Copy it to your desktop and try to open it.) If it doesn’t open, keep doing this procedure, working your way back through time. (The latest backup, the second latest, the third latest, etc.)
My experience has been, that you will get back to an openable version.

I don’t know the camera, but, as there’s been no other replies, when you select the master clip in the Browser, then select ‘Mark’ menu, does “DV Start/Stop Detect shoe as an option?

If so, that will do it for you.

Looking ahead, seeing as you’ve shot everything 16:9, I’d be inclined to edit and master in 16:9. Then make a 16:9 Letterbox alternative master, to suit the purpose you described. If, however, at some point in the future, you want to repurpose your program in the more-modern 16:9 format, or use part of this master in another program, the full 16:9 will save a lot of headaches, time & money.
And easy to do at this time.

Mostly … ABC Australia broadcasts 14:9 on SD.

You could shoot and edit in DV quite well on your iMac; many other students work this way. Use the appropriate Easy Setup and be mindful of field-order issues from any other sources you accept (such as motion graphics.)
Produce a DV master, check it on a video monitor, then have that dubbed to a format suitable for the network – I’d recommend Digital Betacam.
At every stage, work in widescreen (DV anamorphic) as this will help future-proof your film and give you more screening options internationally, which is the desire of most students. Check with the initial broadcaster about how they want to present your film: 4:3 centre-cut from your 16:9 master or as 16:9 letterbox. That way, you know, before you begin, whether to use all of the widescreen format, or to confine major elements including graphics to a 4:3 safe within 16:9.
Far easier to get 16:9 into a 4:3 format, than 4:3 into a 16:9 format.

Been wishing for a FAR better interface for capturing & outputting to tape for ages. (Sent that request to Apple through the official channels ages ago.) With long captures and especially outputs, the user has little/no idea where they’re at timecode-wise.

In answer to the first part of your question, which application to learn next might very well depend on what kind of editing you want to do and/or for whom you want to work.

And the second part … wanting to be a Colorist and knowing Apple Color would be of much advantage.

Some people keep a CRT in the suite as well as their new LCD.
Even a 14″ if a 20″ is too big.
