My first thought is that are your whites set to peak white at 1V or are they over ?
My reason for asking is that if they are over although your patches appear to be invisible they are in fact at slightly lower level but disguised by everything being a bit over.
When played on a TV the TV is limiting the white by bringing the level down. As this is an overall gain reduction this in turn exposes your patches as slightly grey.
Where the levels are not so over no limiting happens and the patches blend in.
Anyway as I said just a thought.

I am pretty sure that the i/o Express has not got the option for an analogue composite video input. It only supports SDI in and out and Component/Composite out. (but not in)
So there is no way of using that with your Umatic machine.
You need something that has an analogue composite input. Which you simply attach via a standard BNC cable to the video output of the Umatic.
Obviously you need to connect up the audio as well.There was no RS422 remote option on the Umatic either so you will have to use ‘capture now” as there will not be any deck remote control options.
Probably the Canopus video/firewire box is the cheapest option as long as you are happy with DV res – should be OK for Umatic.
Or you could hire an IO HD which does have composite in and would allow you more flexibilty on your capture codec but that may not prove to be easy or cost effective depending on where you are.

Usually you would use kind of capture card there are many options of both internal cards or external boxes from AJA Kona, Blackmagic or Matrox.
Depending on your budget and the Mac you use one of these will be suitable.
However since the 7020 only has a composite video output (I think) then a cheaper option would be something like this:

which will take analogue video and turn it into a firewire output which you can then easily capture without the need of a more sophisticated card.

You may find a faster graphic card helps but there are other potential bottlenecks. Whilst the faster cards in that list might offer some gain I am not sure they are going to add huge performance to straight video playback alone.
You dont say what kind of hard drives you are using.
ProRes 4444 are very large files and require fast drives to play smoothly especially more than one stream.
Just out of curiosity what kind of work are you doing with the 4444 files.
What is your storage set-up ? I wonder if that is possibly slowing you down.

The VO tool will, by defualt, use the next available track. So I guess you have audio on 1+2 so it is putting the VO on track 3.
You can override this by using the track 2 source selector and routing it to whichever track you would prefer to have your VO recorded to.
So if it track 5 simply select source track 2 and route it to track 5.
I have also seen people lock tracks they dont want to use but thats a few more clicks.
Yes the voice over file is recorded on your default scratch disk.

This should work, if you install FCPX on the same partition as FCP the older apps are automatically moved to a folder applications/final cut studio
I guess installing just Motion 5 would do the same so have a look there.

Right click on the MP4 file and select “get info” you will then see an option to “open with” (about 4th down) – just select whatever software you would prefer to open your files with.
Should be it.

As far as I know that camera records to DVD ?
Which version of FCP are you using ? I know that FCP 6 had only very limited support for AVCHD and could not import from DVD.If you have FCP 7 then you stand more of a chance – Shane Ross did a nice tutorial here

Version 5.0 was not compatible with Intel Macs but I think from version 5.1 onwards it was.
I think I remember that was a paid upgrade though so the chances of you finding that upgrade alone would be possibly slim.
You may also have issues running 5.x with later versions of Quicktime too.
Pretty sure that version 5 didn’t support any of the ProRes codecs either so you may well be limited as to what you can do in any case.
Maybe keep an eye out on ebay etc for a legit upgrade version of FCP 7 and use your V5 licence to upgrade ? Probably save you a whole load of grief from trying to get what you have working.
