importing footage from Camera Sony HDR-UX5

As far as I know that camera records to DVD ?
Which version of FCP are you using ? I know that FCP 6 had only very limited support for AVCHD and could not import from DVD.

If you have FCP 7 then you stand more of a chance – Shane Ross did a nice tutorial here
