Yes I know you don’t have an extra 2k burning a hole in your pocket… But in my honest opinion, your G5 still works right, it edits right?????

for 1.3k you are not going to purchase that much of an improvement over what you have..

I am editing on a 4 year old dual gig G4, uncompressed 8 bit SD video and my clients still think it is a bargain even with all the render time… I am saving the gold for a MacPro this summer… just about 4 more jobs worth of savings before I jump…

Go do 4 or 5 wedding jobs and let them buy you the right machine…

This business is more than new toys,,, it is all about the right toys…

Your 1.8 G5 should be fast enough to run Leopard, If I remember correctly it is right over the threshold.. So keep things running and save your money for a MacPro that has an appreciable improvement over what you have.

Another 2 grand and you will have a very good machine..

I was of the understanding that FCP didn’t have a native codec for AVC-Intra.

I thought all things AVC-intra had to be editied with the Apple Pro Res codec.

According to P2 Maestro Barry Green’s book, the HVX 200 has over 180 different camera setups that you can do. Of these 180 combinations, some are for the removal of noise. It is called ‘coring’. I just got my HVX200 last December and I am amazed at what it can do.

And I am currently getting prices to purchase the more ‘corporate friendly’ HPX500….

So buy both,, you’ll need them..

I think that all here would agree, that the skill and competence to accurately offload and trouble shoot the P2 off load process is a great skill to have. If I had to choose between a grip that just hauled gear and set up lights …. and a grip that could off load and trouble shoot P2 … the P2 guy is the man….

Computers are funky, with every software upgrade they might work, they might not… knowing the current history and problems encountered with P2 on the Mac and the PC is very valuable info to know.. Add that knowledge with a comprehensive hands on understanding of the HPX3000 menus and you might soon find your self as the go to guy on all sorts of jobs….

Knowledge is a powerful thing to have…. learn all the P2 tech you can,,,, Just don’t list P2 guy on your mortgage application,,, yet..

If you have been in this biz for ten years, you “should know” that there are a thousand answers to your questions… And budget is always the first answer that needs to be filled in.. We all dream of what could be, and that is what we want, till budget kicks you in the head..

I am transitioning my AB roll Betacam SP / Cinewave RT suite to all Panasonic P2, HVX200 and HVX500 with a new MacPro quad this summer with a budget ceiling of 40k.. That will be a tough target to hit, considering I need a new raid and HD monitoring. But I already have the lights and tripod. In my book, P2 technology is the new Betacam SP of our wonderful industry.

And all those young wippersnappers, who can convince Corporate CEO Dummies that video is easy and cheap can now prove it for about 100,000 fewer dollars than I had to chew on 30 years ago.. ( I hope you are hourly and get overtime pay )

Do you have a Pro-broadcast background. Your post sounds like maybe not… All the broadcast cameras and editing gear in the world will not help you deliver 15 hours of finished broadcast video a week, the week it is delivered.

You need to find an experienced Pro with a long resume and share the love.. A true broadcast pro will save you money, false starts, get you up to 15 hours quickly and maybe teach you and your company a few broadcast tricks…

Your post sounds like “it’s just video, How hard can it be” If you really want to find out, tell the girl friend and family that you are joining the Video monastery and will not be available for at least 6 months of video training.. Expect to never go to bed and keep your resume handy for when the bosses realize that video is not a slam dunk, thank you mam, kinda of business.
