  • AVC-Intra codec not found in Final Cut Pro

Posted by Robert Longwell on April 3, 2008 at 4:02 pm

We have FCP 6.0.2 and have some test footage shot with the AVC-I codec. However FCP is complaining about the missing codec with a “Warning AVC-Intra codec not found” error n the Log & Transfer window.

Anyone know where we can acquire this codec for Mac/FCP?

    Thanks!

You have to go to the panasonic website and download the codec:

    ID: p2qtime

    PASSWORD: nacg5

    URL: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/dload/qtime/index.htm

I was of the understanding that FCP didn’t have a native codec for AVC-Intra.

I thought all things AVC-intra had to be editied with the Apple Pro Res codec.

Correct, FCP does not edit in AVC-I format. When importing through the Log & Transfer tool, it can be compressed to ProRes or ProRes HQ. But it needs the AVC-I codec in the first place just to import.

So, at this point there is really no other way to convert AVC-I for use in other NLEs? If you are cutting on another system besides FCP you’re SOL, yes?

From what I have read, Avid still does not support this format. And event the way FCP is supporting this isn’t all that great. Converting on a new Mac Pro to ProRes is 2x real time for me.

If you’re on Avid you can use software available from Panasonic to convert the files to P2 DVCProHD format apparently.

But converting back to DVCProHD is taking the 10bit AVC-I back to 8bit, which would be ashame. At least with ProRes HQ you keep the 10bit info.

True. But if it is the difference between being able to edit your footage or not in the Avid world…well let’s just say I’m just happy to be in FCP for now 🙂

Edius Broadcast has a plugin for AVC-Intra. I just ordered it today.
