SO was this sensor, a heat sensor? Was it shutting down your computer or just overheating it?
What was the symptom of a bad ambient sensor.. I am just tracking cause and effect problems… so maybe I will recognize them when they bite me.
And hopefully they never will….. well, at least not when a client is sitting in the room…

Was it still working?? The MacBook Pro is supposed to have ‘drop protection” circuits built in to protect the hard drive, etc..
I don’t care if the tools get scruffy and dinged up as long as they can do the job and keep on ticking… Performance is what I would focus on…
I have met all sorts of careless Video people, who are skilled at busting lenses off cameras dropping decks from carts, plus. But these people are always working for somebody else, who own the gear. I try very hard to not hire them for my jobs. “Knock on wood” 20 plus years and No insurance claim…

I will keep my 15″ Mac Book Pro, same screen size, but you have more pixels… but 15″ is still very small… I have firewire 400 and 800 full size ports not mini. The mini 4pin port will not power external 2.5″ Hard Drives. 4gb ram and larger 200gig 7200rpm HD with bigger processor 2.4… additional DVI port to attach field 24″ LCD …. just about the same price..
On location will play on it, but I don’t have it yet.. Final Cuts ‘capture know’ has captured over 3.5 hours (battery life) 1080 60i from HVX200 to external sata mirror via express card and 32 foot fire wire cable with NO drop outs… See if you Panasonic can do that….

Depending on how much footage you have, JUST export them as H264 mpg4 files.
If your client has a recent Quicktime version…. They will look great and play great..

But this Silicon Image 3124 chipset.. You mention it is problematic. Is it the only chipset for sata port multiplier technology? I like the idea of connecting one sata cable to a box of 5 sata drives. Are there other chipsets that allow for sata port multiplier technology? This 3124 problem reminds me of the early firewire chipsets and how if it wasn’t the Oxford chipset you would have problems…

Micro Center purchased a bunch of the CompUSA stock to my surprise. when I stopped by last week… So I got 4 usb/esata 2 enclosure at 19 bucks each, yep 19 buckeros including cable and power and they have a little blue light ohhhh.. Silent with no fans…. Micro Center had the Western Digital sata drives with 16mb cache 500gigs for $105… So for $125 bucks I got a 500 gig sata drive. I use 2 at a time with my Macbook Pro as a mirrored raid for our HVX200 and so far very nice.. I am going back to buy more enclosures and then will buy Hard drives as needed for the jobs.. (cause they keep getting cheaper) The enclosures were easy to load with the drives. All you need is a phillips screw driver. I have purchased other enclosures from CompUSA (when they had a store) and they are still working. So they are pretty good off brand enclosures. Do your daily backups, build your own Hard drives / raids, save money..

It seems that everyday a new Raid vendor is discovered. If the Hard drives are equal and the enclosures look like everybody’s using the same manufacturer (and they do). The big difference in raids is customer support. Customer support is what you pay for.(knowledge of raid cards, cables, etc.) But customer support can be good one month and terrible the next. So the guys, who have recent history with raid customer support and post here on the Cow are your most valuable resource. I purchased a Medea RTRX 4 years ago and it is still going strong with great customer support, but since Avid acquired Medea, for some reason the name has disappeared from the FCP forums.
I have targeted June to buy my next MacPro and have been struggling with the thought of just buying the enclosure (https://www.addonics.com/) and building my raid. Which should be at least 40% less than a name brand. But as Wally keeps reminding me, when the new raid gets the ‘hiccups’ – “who do I call” distributors like Addonics state right on their Web page that they don’t do customer service support. Ya got to fix it yourself.

So you spent $300 bucks on a scanner, Ok been there done that, and you are running it on a Mac under Windows? Why not on a PC.. I have read many places that you can not put together a PC with the same kick for the price of a Mac Pro.. And that is more than just a hardware issue, it is a Mac design issue, that has a long legacy of working great.. Thank you Mr. Jobs.
I will have my new Mac Pro sometime in June and do look forward to running my ‘fav’ graphics program Inscriber… Inscriber does a lot and it would be even greater if I can run it on the Mac and not a clumsy PC..
Yes, I am a fan of well designed hardware and the software to make it run… Let’s just call it a clean design with a purpose… So yes I am a proud #2 Mac Fan Boy and I take my hat off to the #1 Mac fan boy senior and his new forum…….

Yes I know, It happens,,,, and sometimes you just have too…
But just the thought of running clumsy windows on a Mac,, doesn’t it make you ill..
