Walter,
I am trying to plug in a dollar “ballpark” to your list (and a yummy one it is)
With out the Panny 1400, would you say you have $ 45k on your list?
Your Anthro desk with monitor arms I have no estimate on their range. I have seen their ads.
Shane’s and your gear list are great. Your list (minus the desk) is my 12 month goal,, that I will have to build towards.
You have mentioned that for HDcam Masters, you have a shop in Atlanta you go to? Do you take them a Hard drive or the master off the 1400? HD editing I am learning fast. HD deliverables is still my unanswered budget line item.

Bobby,
The best FCP edit system is the one that is “Paid For” Then all the work you do with it is Profit minus labor….. Or if your clients are like mine, the “free” edits wont cost you so much.
It is just not hardware. It is a business. Do a spread sheet and the math to understand just what your financial “pain” tolerance will be over the next couple years. Sometimes longer renders on slower less expensive Macs is not as “painful” as the large monthly payments for the latest and greatest.
I am Updating my SD betacam SP Cinewave Dual gig Mac G4 system this summer. But I will buy the best Mac stripped. Add my own Hard drives and ram. I will get a new 23 Apple Monitor (3 year warranty) an MXO to turn the 23″ into HD broadcast, a cheaper 24″ monitor of the month special, and build my own sata array. P2 is firewire ingest, so I do not need a Kona card right now. I can still use my old G4 for tape mastering and capture of SD material.
And with a Blue ray burner, I can deliver HD.My best quess on total anticipated cost about $ 9K plus tax and freight.

April 18, 2008 at 9:42 pm in reply to: Areca RAID card – any experiences good or bad ?Tom, Thanks for the shopping list..
That is a great total price. Was there a reason for Seagate over Hitachi, beside price?
Four years ago I paid over $ 6,600 for a new Medea RTRX 1 TB raid… amazing..
Keep us posted if you have any problems with it…. You have made my HD upgrade path more reasonable.

I use the HVX200 all the time FW to MBP to external mirrored sata drives works great.. Over 2+ hours of recording to small 2.5inch sata drives with out any problems…. FCP capture now
You might need to dial the camera time code generator to “free run”

P2 is not a tape based work flow. You will make mistakes, You will learn.
P2 is fast, clean and I am really enjoying it. It has been 4 months since I jumped in. It is a lot to learn because the HVX200 has a lot of options to share. I am purchasing the HPX500 very soon for our “More” corporate clients….
And I am already salivating over the NAB announced Varicam P2 3700… That has to be One sweet machine…
Read, read, google and google… I am averaging 2 to 3 hours a night since last December trying to learn all things P2 -HD..
But if you prefer, I will sell you my Betacam Sp/ Dvcam – Sony DXC35wsl… so you can have tape… 🙂
PS: Google CMOS, search for Barry Greens article…

Fernando, My MBP (dec 07) works great using an external monitor via DVi-vga to lcd..
I haven’t thought of trying to watch video back thru my DSR DVcam 2100 deck,, yet
BUT I have noticed that I am continually having to REFRESH external video.. I am always having to click the refresh button. Much more than my old Power Book….

So your Onion Skin Cover, did you get it at the corner store, behind those funny mags?
I didn’t say to soak it in alcohol… But when you spend 10 to 15 hours every day getting to a deadline, the alcohol will soften the grease and grime so you can wipe it off with a clean cloth..
and you might want to un-plug it first…. I hate greasy sticky toxic tools and keyboards..The worst I ever saw, was when I helped a friend rewire and re-configure the control room of a local Major broadcast station. When we turned the lights up, we discovered a Grass Valley 3000 digital switcher that was so covered with grease and dirt, it looked like it had grown slime mold… Beyond disgusting, to the point that it was toxic to your health… YUK
I use Bella color coded keyboards and if you use my gear, you wash your hands first. Respect the gear, respect your health..respect the client,, clean tools, clean job flow makes for great video… it is a way of life….that has worked for me..

David,
I keep a 3 inch paint brush in the back of the Keyboard drawer… works great.. Just hold the keyboard on it side and sweep it out…
If if gets really bad, I vacuum it or dip the brush in alcohol to get the finger oils and grime off..

Winston,
if the newbies, weren’t asking their basic questions here, like “can I run FCP2 on my G3” we wouldn’t have any fun, with the upside down answers… I’ll bet most of us work in a small office (out of the house) of one to three people.. And I’ll bet the survey says they are one man shops more than anything……
I learn from the Cow and have fun with the Cow. Sure the newbies can be tiresome, but it is nice to try out the new (and old) jokes on them just to see what would work with the clients.
Every job has newbies to harass,, that is part of the fun. And they are usually the ones your bidding against because they can look the client in the eye and say “yep, I can do everything, it is just video, how hard do you think it is, I got a big college degree and I will do it all for ten dollar”
I don’t mind them swimming in my pond, somebody has to feed the Alligators :-0

“Ah, the good ol’ days…….. ”
When men were men and if the machines didn’t do it, It was the engineers fault..
‘Where’s that damn engineer when you need him’
“Was that a drop out on the b roll?’
