Yes, it seems that it is in Avid’s best interest to keep things a little vague in this area. On the other hand, I can see how it simplifies things.

Do you already have the new software? Have you already tried installing it on your current machine?

I decided to try installing it on the computer I had, and it worked, at least so far. Of course, if I run into problems, I can’t say they didn’t warn me, and I’ll have to get something else, hopefully not in the middle of a deadline.

It really does boil down to what risk you want to take, and how much you want to tweak things to get them to work. Of course, even though it shouldn’t have worked on mine, I have had to do absolutely NO tweaking…yet. So, it’s a tough question to answer in general terms. Try installing it if you have the software and see what happens. What do you have to lose. If you want to work in absolutes, you’re asking for trouble, but the best bet is to drop the cash and have piece of mind.

If you want to save cash, buy an older generation certified system. It won’t render as fast, but it’ll work.

Frankly, video editing was never advertised as a low cost endeavor, at least at the pro level. Hard to get around that fact.

Are you getting a Media Offline message? Or is this something completely different?
There seem to be a couple issues here. It seems you have to transfer the Project folder, the Media Files folder (ie: Z:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\files…) and then you sometimes also have to delete the two database files within the Media folder. then it seems Avid will just automagically recreate the links to the media files…here’s some other forums posts with more info.

Here’s the info on the clip:

Again, the strange thing is that the source of all this material is the same. I imported from a Canon VIXIA HV30 via firewire into Sony Vegas. All the other clips imported to Avid just fine. Settings are the same. I wonder if it’s just a glitch.

For some reason I just tried again, and it’s importing without error. Hmmmmm….

    Thanks, I didn’t know that.

So if I wanted to convert to MOV in a “lossless” way, do these settings look right?

This is strange because this problem only seems to be occurring when playing back studio dv25 epk mov clips in the trimmer.

However, as mentioned in the previous post, the problem was more widespread (trimmer, timeline, imported dv clips as well) in the other inflicted machine I had used. This one seems to be mostly okay, but with more jitters than the previous video card.

I started having the same problems when I switched from an ATI card to NVIDIA. It hiccups on a consistent basis. I am able to play back at higher preview resolution so I know the video card is doing a better job than the previous, but the upgrade also introduced this strange hiccuping.

In fact this problem also has been an issue on a different machine with an NVIDIA card. But until I did this upgrade from ATI did I begin to really suspect the video card. Let me state that I have nothing against NVIDIA, in fact I kind of believed they made a better product, for no good reason.

Same computer, same CPU, different card. Very interesting. My sugggestion is to either change platforms if you wish, or try an ATI card on the same machine and see what happens.

Anyone out there that has an NVIDIA and does not have this problem, or can shed some light if they had to do some modifications to get correct playback?

Thanks for the Shared projects tip, that was very simple and somewhat intuitive yet I would never had thought to do that.

As far as the 2GB AVI file limit, I have to say I have no authority on the subject as I am brand new to Avid. Here’s the error I get when I try to import an AVI file over 2GB. Other AVI files that were part of the same DV capture session and under 2GB imported to my Bins just fine.

I searched for this problem before posting and found this post where someone who seems very knowledgeable stated the 2GB limit rule. However the post if about 2 years old so who knows…

Avid was never built on Quicktime. Thge 2Gb limit was imposed by older operating systems that could not deal with files bigger that that. OSX and XP no longer have this restriction but the need to be aware of file linits cannot be ignored becuase of legacy systems. It will take a while for the entire transition to take place.

I read somewhere that Avid could not handle .avi files over 2gb due to legacy file restrictions. Has this still not changed with 3.0?

I also read you could convert them to QT with a lossless codec…does Sorenson offer that option, and if so, which options would that be?

September 12, 2008 at 10:17 pm in reply to: Laptop vs. Workstation

This is all great information to think about Jon.
FYI, the post link you provided had been taken down.

I think to summarize the bottom line is that a laptop is a laptop, not a desktop. Avid is more suited for desktops, because of the inherent hardware complexity it brings.

Although laptops may be limited, I bet you could figure out a solution, with some extra peripherals to make it work pretty good even with a mojo and external monitor(s). Sort of like a docking station.

It sounds like the real solution here is not either-or, but both. I should probably have a tower setup here in the office for everyday editing, capturing, previewing. Then I should have a laptop just for cutting on the road or at home.

The next problem to solve is where to find the money for both…

Thanks Terry, the cookie cutter trick was just what I was looking for.

Although, if it were much longer, the keyframe part could become really tedious.

Does anyone know if there is a way that Vegas can track the object so you don’t have to do the motion manually?
