Converting AVI to MOV lossless
Posted by Naiche Lujan on September 15, 2008 at 11:41 pmI have imported a lot of footage in AVI format through another program and just found out that you can’t use AVI files over 2GB with AVID.
Can someone tell me what settings to use in Squeeze to losslessly convert the files to MOV for import? Also, is there a way to change a project to Shared or External after you created it as Private? Or will I just have to start over?
Thanks

I’m not totally sure that’s a true statement. The 2GB file limit (at least as I understand it) is an OS issue related to FAT32 drives and export. If your system is NTFS (and it should be if it is a certified system) there shouldn’t be a problem – it’ll just take a long time. This might be a setting issue, but I’m not in front of my Avid to check.
If you want to try Sorenson, find out the data rate of your .avi and match those settings in Squeeze.
As far as projects, just drag the project from where it is now to the shared folder (open my computer>Shared>Avid Projects).

September 16, 2008 at 4:11 pmThanks for the Shared projects tip, that was very simple and somewhat intuitive yet I would never had thought to do that.
As far as the 2GB AVI file limit, I have to say I have no authority on the subject as I am brand new to Avid. Here’s the error I get when I try to import an AVI file over 2GB. Other AVI files that were part of the same DV capture session and under 2GB imported to my Bins just fine.

I searched for this problem before posting and found this post where someone who seems very knowledgeable stated the 2GB limit rule. However the post if about 2 years old so who knows…

Avid was never built on Quicktime. Thge 2Gb limit was imposed by older operating systems that could not deal with files bigger that that. OSX and XP no longer have this restriction but the need to be aware of file linits cannot be ignored becuase of legacy systems. It will take a while for the entire transition to take place.

September 17, 2008 at 11:39 amIt appears Michael P was referring to an export issue. You are having trouble with import, right? And you are on XP, correct?
From the error, I would bet you have some funky audio sample rate issues. In the settings, double click ‘audio project’. Make sure you have the ‘convert audio’ button checked (it’s something like that – I’m not in front of an Avid right now).
From a different post, I see you posted some specs of your footage. Can you tell me what the sample rate is (should be a number like 32k, 44.1k, 48k, etc)?

Again, the strange thing is that the source of all this material is the same. I imported from a Canon VIXIA HV30 via firewire into Sony Vegas. All the other clips imported to Avid just fine. Settings are the same. I wonder if it’s just a glitch.
For some reason I just tried again, and it’s importing without error. Hmmmmm….
