Or to make things even simpler without any expression magic you could always use the Echo effect.

It must be contained in an RLA or RPF file as special channels. For some strange reason the 3D channel filters are not usable with normal b/w sequences (even though that would yield the same result in many cases). Other than that you can feed several filters with your depth grayscale to fake DOF or you could aply it to a solid as a matte to fake fog.

Some editing programs offer scene detection, but I think it’s limited to taped footage in most cases since it works based on timecode and other meta data. Can’t you just speed up you movie fast as hell using time stretch and then have AE export still frames? With a high enough setting there’s a good chance to get each slide to only apper just exactly one or two frames. You could always sort out the few redundant image files later…

Well, get another hard drive! You’re really strangling your system if it’s 96% full. Without improving that neither your OS nor AE itself might be succesfully able to create any swap/ temporary files. I seriously think that’s the main problem here, not some graphics card related stuff. It’s also fatal to have all footage on one drive if it’s not a fast RAID – all that I/O is causing delays that might be another reason for crashes (too many file accesses choking everything up). For instance AE not being able to read your files in time would explain several of the “unable to create texture” errors. Move some of your image sequences to another drive and your situation should improve noticably.

Animate it manually by splitting your text layers into separate segments in the timeline (any AE version) or creating keyframes for the source text attribute (it will include the font attributes which are otherwise not animatable using text animators[AE 6.0 and up]). Alternatively you could try Digital Anarchy’s Text Anarchy plugins – it contains a tool called Font Changer that will cycle through 4 fonts of your choice.

May 24, 2005 at 6:05 pm in reply to: Unreliable performance on WinXP Pro

I’d definitely concur with Steve’s assesment. 512 MB is very little RAM on XP Pro. You have to understand that even a view “simple” videos can easily amount to massive RAM consumption – AE will try to hold as many frames as long as possible in the RAM. This is even more true for nested comps since quite obviously the cannot be directly scrubbed from disc and each frame needs to be calculated. Have you considered using proxies and pre-rendering to minimize those effects?

Activate the continuously update preview button in the timeline window.

That’s a hidden feature/ trick. Double-click on the empty area beside the tab to unlock it. All new comps should now open in one timeline window.

May 23, 2005 at 9:23 am in reply to: OT: CD label inkjet printer software

No, the software is not available for free download, but if you contact customer support they normally send you a link where you can downlaod it or attach it directly. Otherwise your printer works from any other app – it’s just difficult to align it with your CD/ DVD and you have to define the non-printable areas yourself with white overlays.
