[Andrew Yoole] “Nope.”
Thats wrong. AE supports basic math operations so if you type in 100-value you get the inverted value for opacity. Problem is, it only works with one keyframe selected, but I think there is a script floating around somewhere, that will do the trick. Anyway, not really much point in this since it’s easy to calculate the values (as he already has)and it’s only 6 keyframes.

May 28, 2005 at 10:47 am in reply to: How can I make a mask affect a layer with offset on it?[RoRK] “Looks like you do not understand AE’s Render Pipeline.”
Not to sound completely arrogant, but I can’t shake the feeling there’s a lot Daniel doesn’t understand in computer graphics, not only in AE. A lot of his questions are so basic, it looks like he hasn’t even read the manuals or searched tutorials on the web. Once again, no insults intended, just an observation.

If you’re refering to Grid Iron’s X-Factor it will surely allow you to do RAM previews more efficiently, but it won’t necessarily speed up interactive work or final rendering. You should more focus on lowering preview resolutions, soloing layers, using proxies and that kind of things. The effects of those measures are more noticeable.

Nope, not really. You could try Buena Software’s Depth Cue, but I’m not really sure if it will do what you need without re-creating your project from scratch (it requires rather large scenes to see any of its depth effects). Other than that you could try some expressions to make your objects fade in based on their distance to the camera – still not perfect, but better than nothing.

There shouldn’t be a problem render module templates, configs etc. – they are created under the current user context in the users home directory which by default at least has write permissions for the owner/ user. For the rest of the stuff like adding fonts and managing plugins you should be a “main user”. Administrative priviliges are not required unless your system administrators explicitely changed the default Windows behaviors. I would try to talk your people into creating a special user group “AE Users” and give that group the required rights. Then it’s much easier to manage users, add existing users to that group or create new ones.

Yepp. Use fields. Finding out which field order is correct is up to you, though. In theory it should be upper/odd field first for a PAL project, but some 3D programs have switched around settings.

May 27, 2005 at 5:32 am in reply to: Is it possible to do an ALPHA MATTE in photoshop like you would in After EffectsGuess what the cahnnels palette is for ;o). Do this:
a) Select your b/w image, use Edit -> Copy.
b) In your main document create an empty mask on the layer you want the matte to be.
c) Open the channels palette. Besides the RGB an a possibel default Alpha you should find a channel named “My Layer’s Mask” or something like that. Select it and do an Edit -> Paste. DoneYou might need to turn off the other channels or select the entire canvas, but eventually you’ll get it to work. Masks can be treated with most PS functions, so invert and adjust them as needed.
