I suggest reading the manual for finding out all this. You seem to be a bloody beginner (no insults intended) and if that is the case, there is little point discussing the intricacies of expressions or different masking/ matting techniques. Let me just throw in one coment: Expressions are used to define dependencies between layers based on mathematical rules or certain conditions. Everything you can do with expressions can be achieved with manual techniques and keyframes, but it takes much longer. Basically expressions are a way auf simplifying such processes and automating projects.

Getting smooth playback on NTSC from a PAL video is an illusion. AE always needs to extrapolate non-existing frames and this will make any motion look odd. The best results I’ve ever seen are created with the Algolith frame rate converter. Unfortunately it’s expensive, extremely slow and very unstable to use. Also look into other alternatives such as RevisionFX’ range of products or ReTimer. Lastly: Look for other external tools such as ProCoder or Cleaner. There’s a million ways, but none of them will do what can be called perfect.

Attach the expression to a text layer or yet another Expression Control that references a value. With standard parameters such a scale, rotate etc. you also can temporaily use their values as feedback (not that it is always that useful, since obviously it does not show the effect as it is intended). There is no other way. Unfortunately AE does not provide alert() or similar stuff for expressions.

No, but as far as I know only these do:

    AE:

    Shatter
    CC Particles
    CC Sphere
    CC Cylinder

    Trapcode:

    Particular
    Lux
    3D Stroke

    Digital Anarchy:

    3D Layer
    Psunami

There may be a few others, but in general your options are limited in this respect. It surely wouldn’t hurrt to have a 3D program handy to do certain things.

If it’s MAX, I’m sure it would be simple to adjust. Perhaps you could also try to adjust antialiasing in a way the results are better for your needs.

How is the box created? If it’s made of AE layers, try using Advanced 3D instead of Standard 3D. If you’re already doing this, then I guess you’re out of luck. All you could do then is change the animation of the box/ cube. Flickering normally occurs on almost horizontal lines because the antialiasing changes between frames/ fields.

You can do this using CC Sphere. I’m not 100 percent sure (not at my AE atm), but it has a sweep setting somewhere that should allow something like you described. The sides could easily covered by using the Circle effect on a separate layer cut away with masks.

I’m not sure what should be the problem. All you need to do is relate the in- and out-points to the time and use that to trigger specific text. Should be real simple.
