Can someone explain to me what expressions are and what they do? My second question is I have been messing with the saphire pluggin demo, I wanted to know how is is possible to just have something effect one area of my composition. For instance the stars preset is effects my whole entire shot when i want it to effect the top right corner. What type of mask or something do i need to do? Thanks

For your second question,I think you duplicate the layer and add a mask for the upper layer.recomp it in to a new comp, then add the effect to it.now your effect seems to work only in one area.

I suggest reading the manual for finding out all this. You seem to be a bloody beginner (no insults intended) and if that is the case, there is little point discussing the intricacies of expressions or different masking/ matting techniques. Let me just throw in one coment: Expressions are used to define dependencies between layers based on mathematical rules or certain conditions. Everything you can do with expressions can be achieved with manual techniques and keyframes, but it takes much longer. Basically expressions are a way auf simplifying such processes and automating projects.
