[Justin Productions] “We don’t say “crap” here, we say “not good”.”

*lol* Considering it’s not exactly “one of those bad words”, I don’t think it’s really a problem. If we keep this up for the sake of misunderstood politeness and respect, we’ll probably end up using George Orwell’s Newspeak and say “doubleplusungood”. ;o)

May 18, 2006 at 5:25 am in reply to: PAL progressive to NTSC progressive

[Gregoire] “Just wondering if there is any good way of converting PAL progressive to NTSC progressive without stuttering the fluidity of motion?”

No, not really. Since any tool needs to “invent” inbetween frames, it will never look perfectly smooth, regardless if its field-based or progressive. You can use the time-stretch effect in AE 7 to good effect, but make sure to stretch each scene separately – this type of filters does not react well to hard cuts or other sudden changes in the footage.

May 18, 2006 at 5:22 am in reply to: Slow motion problem in AE 7 pro

Are you using the effect or the normal time-remapping? I advise to use the first option, if you have Pro. Still, it won’t look as smooth as you perhaps desire – after all, at 25% AE already needs to “imake up” 3 new frames between each orignal frame.

As for your last frame – it’s very unlikely that on tweaked footage it will be identical to the original, either to the fact that AE is sampling it at a different time (keep in mind: AE thinks in time, not in frames!) or it’s getting interpolated with other pixels.

Text animator -> scale? Dunno, but I think you’rre trying to see a problem where there is none.

Yeah, this is a known problem and should be fixed with the next version of AE. No way around it at the moment.

May 17, 2006 at 6:35 pm in reply to: collapse transformation switch and 3D layers.

[Jason Harmon] “Ok Ive got a comp with four video clips in it, each clip is scaled down about 40%. I then nest that comp into a second comp and turn on the collapse transformation switch to preserve the quality of the four original clips. Why is it that when I then turn on the 3D layer switch that I can’t manipulate the z postion of the nested comp? (or when I do nothing happens) If I add a camera to the comp changing the camera position, point of interest has no effect.”

Turn your layers in 3D layers in the sub-comp.

[Jason Harmon] “Also if I add an effect which uses a camera (card dance) the quality of the clips is not preserved. Why? Am I missing something, doing something wrong, or is that just too much to ask AE to do??”

Card Dance is basically a 2D effect with its own little 3D universe. It doesn’t know anything what AE does beyond tracking the camera. You need to keep your clips full res in a nested comp and scale this layer down with Card Dance applied.

Yeah, just like the others said. PDFs usually don’t contain a “canvas”.

May 17, 2006 at 6:26 pm in reply to: random text shapes?

Assuming each letter is on a separate layer, you could use expressions to “morph” them from one position to another, but it will still be a lot of work. Other than that, you’d probably have more luck with just faking the swarming behavior by using some text animators with extrem settings and then animating those parameters to mimic the alignment.

[Matt Hicks] “Is there a ‘replace plugin’ option I’ve missed somewhere? *grin*”

Nope. I believe somewhere on AEnhancers.com or redefinery.com there’s a script that can generate a report of which effect is used on which layer. This might at least help you to track down the suspects.
