May 21, 2006 at 4:35 pm in reply to: Best compression to use when exporting as a quicktime?[gizmo1990] “From my experiments sorenson seems to be ok but its quality is quite inferior to divx, which is what I usually use for my avi’s.”
Not true. Sorenson 3 softens the image a little, but since it isn’t based on blocks, it’s actually better than DivX in many situations (e.g. like embedding it in multimedia apps and scaling it ;o) ). The trick is to give it enough room to breathe (liberla limit or no limit on data rate)and – just like with DivX – to not do the final compression from AE. Render out a uncompressed or only mildly compressed version from AE and then use Quicktime Pro or dedicated compression tools such as Cleaner or Squeeze to create the Sorenson output.
[gizmo1990] “Also I thought quicktime could be encoded using divx but it doesn’t show up in the list of compressors? Is this correct?”
AE will only allow you to use true Quicktime component CoDecs (*.qtx). DivX is a Windows Media component contained in a DLL and will not be accessible from AE for QT. I’d be wary to use it if you want to show your DivX stuff to someone with a Mac. Though there is a DivX for Mac and tools such as VLC can decode it as well, there are still compatibility problems.

Export with Alpha channel and then map it onto a plane. Or do you need the point info for morphs/ endomorphs?

Activate the motion blur preview in the timeline (rightmost button).

Get an unmultiply filter such as Knoll Unmult from rRed Giant Software. It will create proper Alpha based on the luminance of the image.

[aplusjimages] “I’m exporting the project to a resolution of 587×480, but I’m not sure why that would cause this green line. Is there a way to fix it without changing the resolution?”
No. You are using exactly 1 pixel to few. For MPEG-4 and its derivatives like H.264, all resolutions must be based on multiples of 4. Therefore AE will fill “crooked” resolutions with zero-valued pixels (which show as YUV green) to make them compliant to specs.

May 19, 2006 at 3:04 pm in reply to: Batch processing animated title sequences from text list ?Yeah, all of what you need can be done using scripts. You can already find several scripts loading text. just beware: scripts can change the source text, but not text properties such as font face an size, so you definitley need a template comp somewhere to define that. You should separate multiple text fields by giving your layers proper names – it’s easier to find a specific layer by name or index than just having one layer and having to fiddle with lots of invisible characters such as line breaks.

AE will never use more than 3 GB of RAM (a limitation of all 32 bit apps, not AE’s fault). On Windows you have to use a special switch in your boot.ini to make programs aware of that extra RAM.

You can easily have multiple burners if you have a proper burning software like Nero, but they should all be of the same make or at least from the same manufacturer.

Maybe you used a different background color while working and then rendered your clip out with Alpha (which in external viewers will show up against a black background and appear much weaker though the motionblur is calculated correctly). Other than cranking up the shutter angle, I can’t think of a thing to make it more pronounced.

Try the prefab project from my website. You can add jitter using “The wiggler” palette in AE.
