How do i use a lens flare to respect the alpha channel when i render it as a tga. file. i believe i have the lens set up correctly on a solid with add. but when on top of an image that needs to be alpha the lens does not respect the alpa anymore as i render it as a tga. the project needs to be rendered as a tga as there is no other way around this.

Are you setting the output settings to Millions of Colors+ (The plus means with alpha channel).

Side note, it is common to not use an alpha with a lens flare but to just use the screen transfer mode instead.

Get an unmultiply filter such as Knoll Unmult from rRed Giant Software. It will create proper Alpha based on the luminance of the image.

Yes, those. If you create a lens flare over black, just set the layer’s transfer mode to ‘screen’.
