No plugin, but indeed you can use some workarounds by using the structure manager, Excel, Alignj to Spline and a few other tricks. Maybe one day AEC export will also work as an import… Would certainly be nice.

[sandman26] “It is done on most SNL DVDs.”

What do you mean by SNL? Encore does not support subpicture transitions (and it’s not a standardized feature, so not all players support it in the same fashion, anyways) and that is that, as they say. You have to cheat as per David’s suggestion.

In addition to what the others said, there are halftone transitions/ effects in pretty much every larger plugin collection. I definitely recall Sapphire having one and there’s some tools along those lines in one of the Tinderboxes.

You can use the “Create Outline” function in the Structure –> Edit Spline menu to create “rails”. However, it may not solve the problem since the angles may still be off. If you have some time, you should actually constrain your object by using Null objects representing the contact areas of the tires and make those follow your curves. You can then parent the car to that using some IK methodology (may require XPresso).

February 23, 2007 at 6:23 pm in reply to: Scale in Z Depth?

Layers in AE have no depth, so what you want does not work. You need to employ workarounds by e.g. using the Shatter effect or Card Dance or get yourself Zaxwerx Invigorator to create extruded type. BTW, even if AE supportd 3D extrusions, your scenario wouldn’t work – all vertices of the shape would be in the same Z-position and since their is no separation between them, making effectively 0. And we all know (or should know) you can multiply zery with as large numbers as you want, it will always be zero. To circumvent that, even 2D layers would have to have depth… But well, I’m diverting and probably only confusing you.

  • No, not really. I’m just doodling around with R10s new tools and methodologies and since I’m too busy with Beta testing othe new toys, I’m spending way too little time diong that and I’m just plain crap at creating anything “cool” or production-proof. What I was pointing at is more of a theoretical scenario how I would approach it (and I know it would work in Lightwave for instance), but I haven’t actually tried it in C4D. Well, I keep my fingers crossed for you… ;o)

  • [peppie] “So I have to ask, does AE have a better engine under the bonnet? Or is it just that it does things differently?”

It does things differently. AE reads the frames in a different, more coherent manner as separate image buffers and works in RGB all the time. Premiere works in YUV and will, depending on your project settings, not even decode every single frame for playback. If it needs to do so for certain effects and do the color space conversion for the AE plugins to do their stuff, things understandably become much slower. So in that case AE always wins.

Do not forget the Liquify Effect. Aharon made a tutorial on some “blood” writings on a wall and illustrates how to use it to create paint drips.
