  • Align To Spline – Rail Spline / Banking problem …

Posted by Tim West on February 23, 2007 at 12:15 pm

    Hello,

I’m trying to animate a car along a windy road (think hollywood hills!) using the Align to spline tag – I’ve made the road using Sweep Nurbs and am using the spline from this to move the car along – however I am having a few problems with my rail spline to create the banking.
Is there any way of taking the ‘road’ spline that the car is moving along and offsetting (‘outlining’ the spline?) so it provides the same banking and the car appears to be driving on the road?

I can provide the project if this helps,

    thanks for your time,

    T

You can use the “Create Outline” function in the Structure –> Edit Spline menu to create “rails”. However, it may not solve the problem since the angles may still be off. If you have some time, you should actually constrain your object by using Null objects representing the contact areas of the tires and make those follow your curves. You can then parent the car to that using some IK methodology (may require XPresso).

You may want to look into this, the “drive” plug-in. While it costs some money, it can really do a nice job simulating auto motion.
Go here, to get a feeling, watch the demo… https://www.heyne-multimedia.de/c4dplugin/indexx.php?l=en

Thanks a lot for the advice – am going to pursue animating each wheel along splines!
