Is AE generally a better/faster option than Premier when using heavy duty video conversion plugins?
It’s a fairly general question in one sense concerning video standards conversion, deinterlacing, up resing SD to HD and frame rate conversion etc. But in another a very particullar one. Whether After Effects 7 will in fact do these sort of jobs better, faster and more efficiently than Premier 2.0. (When faced with plugins that will work in either.)
When considering plugins such as the Fields Kit deinterlacer and Red Giant’s Instant HD for example, would you expect these sorts of plugins to run better in AE? My question partly comes from trials I have been doing with the Fields Kit deinterlacer. Where the render and export times in Premier were about 4 times what I was getting in AE. So I have to ask, does AE have a better engine under the bonnet? Or is it just that it does things differently? The answers to these and other similar questions will bear on my choice of workflow and equipment.
I would appreciate any comments. Over to you…..

It does things differently. AE reads the frames in a different, more coherent manner as separate image buffers and works in RGB all the time. Premiere works in YUV and will, depending on your project settings, not even decode every single frame for playback. If it needs to do so for certain effects and do the color space conversion for the AE plugins to do their stuff, things understandably become much slower. So in that case AE always wins.
