Clothilde or the Spline Dynamics of the Hair module would do the dynamics part nicely, but if you really mean “spooling” as in unrolling/ rolling a rope onto a reel, then that would have to be hand-animated. Some helix spline inside a sweep NURBS with animated End/ Start should do this most efficiently.

Mmh, that may be difficult. Physically correct shattering is an art in itself. I’d go classical and use the Explosion FX object for the single reason that you can control the appearance of the fragments by modeling/ subdividing your geometry accordingly. You might also get some interesting results using Thinking Particles, but this could become potentially complex.

Choose Revert to Original then the settings should become available again. If you don’t reset this way, Encore maintains a reference to the already cached files which are of course incorrect.

February 27, 2007 at 7:16 am in reply to: Please Help! Dolby Digital Audio problem + video stutter on DVDWell, if it’s only on your computer, then it’s most likely a configuration problem with your sound chipset/ card. The clicking and stutter would indicate that somehow your audio is played out of sync and downconverted in realtime (which your system seems unable to cope with). I would check the settings of the DVD-Player software, something is most certainly wrong there. If all else fails, turn off hardware acceleration completely and switch to plain old Stereo (that’s assuming your player software is configured to expect surround or something). I’d also check the config of your DVD-drive. Encore hanging on exit and your stuttering problem point to a recent change in system configuration and problems with the ATAPI system.

Like bogiesan said – reserve a place at the asylum, if you want to do it in AE. It’s going to drive you nuts. Even the simplest, most unsophisticated 3D animation using incidence shaders is going to look a 100 times better. Find a 3d artist, you are sure to find one. As a instant solution consider the skeleton in Poser combined with the walkcycle generator.

[Eric Gross] “I tried importing (merge) of an eps. But when there was more than one closed path, the program wouldn’t read it as a bezier path, so I couldn’t use the extrude nurbs function. Any thoughts?”
Make sure all paths actually belong to a single spline object (use Functions –> Connect) and revise your spline object using C4Ds tools. also make sure it was “clean” in the first place by getting rid of any problems in Illustrator or Freehand. Safe your stuff in an old AI format (AI 8) or as an EPS. Dunno why you are having trouble. Works for me all the time and it’s one of the few things C4D has always done better than most other 3D programs.

Well, if you want real glass, you need real reflections and refractions. Not all the compositing tricks in the world can circumvent that mathematical and physical principle. You can only try to take down the number of recursions and reduce the antialiasing settings as well las probably get rid of lights that use area shadows, but that’s pretty much it. There’s no general recipe for this type of stuff, so ask yourself if you really need all the fancies. Do you really notice refractions? Can the reflections not be faked by using the environment parameter? Do you need shadows, caustics, scene motion blur, DOF or whatever features you may be using? If you can answer a few of those questions in your favor and get rid of those features because they are not noticeable, than it will go a great length toward making things more speedy. If not, then you will have to accept the long render times or buy a faster renderer (finalRender or soon VRay) ;O)

Have you tried to use the world position instead? Are you sure your sphere even comes close to the limits you specified so your clamp actually kicks in? That aside, the usual platitude: Check your tag priorities. Maybe it’s simply not evaluating properly.

[curtis] “I want to use an expression to either switch an Axis Point from one place to another. If I move the (X) Axis on a parent layer I want my child layer to have one Axis point, and if I move my (Y) Axis on the parent my child layer has a different Axis point.”
Umm, what are the criteria that define where that point is supposed to be? Layer size? Speed? Rotation? Does the interpolation of the anchor point position need to be smooth or is it some abrupt change? Anyway, what you are hinting sounds much more like you are trying to solve a parenting conundrum that doesn’t require any expressions at all. I would say you simply haven’t considered adding more Null objects to sort out your rotations and positions. If it makes you happy, we will gladly fix you up with some code, but without more details it’s just wild guessing.
[curtis] “My second question is, does anybody know how to build your own plugin. If I make this idea that I have work it would be nice if it were in a plugin form. and you add your own variables.”
You download the AE SDK from Adobe, learn to program in C/ C++/ C#, read a lot of books and then spend a few evenings testing, compiling, finding bugs, testing, compiling, finding bugs, testing, compiling, finding bugs, testing, compiling, finding bugs, testing, compiling, finding bugs, testing, compiling, finding bugs, testing, compiling, finding bugs, testing, compiling, finding bugs… Well, you get the idea. If you haven’t even an idea about how to create an expression, it’s way beyond you. but then again, I could be wrong and you might be referring to JSX scripting which is a different story entirely.

[kinetic] “_tiny grains of silver, so that the title shimmers when it rotates”
Gradients combined with Fractal Noise / Noise.
[kinetic] “_a kind of shimmer/glare with the rotation”
More gradients, circles, glow effects.
Not impossible, but mostly a 2D task – create the phenomena as separate layers, use blend modes and then only use your 3D pre-comp as a matte.
