DivX is evil and AE was never meant to handle it. DivX is a strictly DirectDraw CoDec with DRM and other dirty tricks. On top of that, each version of DivX is different and as you already have found out, that is why some of them work and others don’t. If I may be so straight: Don’t waste time trying to fix this problem in AE. Download VirtualDub or a similar tool and convert your AVIs to uncompressed or another suitable format that AE accepts. After that take a sheet of white paper and write on it 1000 times: “I will never ever use DivX again and swaer to switch to Quicktime for all my work.” ;o)

Genarts has a good plugin for this in its arsenal (and they even have an FCP version), but they are rather pricey. The simple (and free) solution is to separate your RGB channels using the Shift Channel or Set Channel effects on separate, blur each of them with a different amount and then blend them back using “Add” mode.

Make your windows separate iobjects and drop them into the “Exclude” list on the S&T Render panel.

You don’t. There is no such thing as a video/ audio mixdown you may know from editing programs. You either pre-compose (select all layers and hit Ctrl+Shift+C) or render out your comp. When you render, you can choose to replace your original composition with the rendered footage, which is probably what you are looking for. ;O).

Well, without digging into the finer intricacies of the German language – there are two terms for compression. One is, as you would expect, “Kompression” and the other is called “Komprimierung”.

No. This does not involve any sort of stroking effect most likely. Either it’s simply 3D layers scaled to form the extensions of the letters or it’s done entirely in a 3D program with a similar technique. You can find similar fonts such as the one used on the web in many flavors. Search for “pixel font”, “bitmap font” or “digital matrix font”.

No problem. I guess with Google’s promises to uphold copyright laws we just have to get used to it… Anyway, the stripes are reminiscent of a technique usually refered to as “random stripes/ blocks”. So if you do a search for that here at the COW, lots and lots of suggestions come up. The rest is pretty much just a matter of finding suitable footage, cropping and positioning it. For synching your stuff, create a RAM preview and while that’s playing, hit “*2 (multiply) on the numpad. This will add timeline markers which can be used as a reference.

Make sure you are using a standard font (Arial Times) for your text and remove all formatting and decorations (underlines, bold, colors etc.). Strangely enough, oftentimes this seriously impairs functionality as this “garbage” pollutes the clipboard data AE expects. Other than that – a simple system restart wil often fix these oddities. It remains a mystery, though.

The only safe road is to have the company responsible for the CAD files make some PDFs or TIFFs for you. Pretty much all such programs can create those two formats these days. Everything else is pointless – you’ll be working your ass off to get it right and then you will find out last minute that some important measurenment info fell between the cracks during your own conversion attempts. Don’t accept any excuses on their part – unless they can give you the money for a Microstation license along with proper hardware plus some training on how to use it, the responsibility is entirely theirs. I have such talks regularly for my 3D work and if theey want pretty pictures, they have to cooperate as much as they may want to avoid the additional work. And yes, Dave is right: Be patient. While you were posting, I was nowhere near a computer and ironing my clothes. ;O).

It doesn’t really matter much. The safest road is to render ouut uncompressed and then play with the compression either in thze standalone FLV Encoder or when directly importing into Flash (it will ask you if you want to convert the video file and offer some options)
