“No Such AVI Compressor”
Hello,
I am trying to alter an AVI I have, but everytime I try to open it in AE I get the error
“No Such AVI Compressor” ….Here are the file details:
Audio Codec: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (44100Hz – 192kb/s, Stereo)
Video Codec: DX50/Divx (DivX 5.x/6.x)Any ideas as to why I can’t open these files?

No I have DivX installed on this computer, and I have no problems looking at other DivX compressed files… just won’t recognize the ones I need it too! Although they work fine using Windows Media Player…

DivX is evil and AE was never meant to handle it. DivX is a strictly DirectDraw CoDec with DRM and other dirty tricks. On top of that, each version of DivX is different and as you already have found out, that is why some of them work and others don’t. If I may be so straight: Don’t waste time trying to fix this problem in AE. Download VirtualDub or a similar tool and convert your AVIs to uncompressed or another suitable format that AE accepts. After that take a sheet of white paper and write on it 1000 times: “I will never ever use DivX again and swaer to switch to Quicktime for all my work.” ;o)

Not that I disagree with you about the DiVX thing but, QuickTime is far from perfect.
When folks at Smartsound ( playback button in preview goes missing when QT 7 is installed ) or even when Lynda.com has to put instructions in their readme files like this
