[fat_pads] “So what I need is some code to implement bezier formulas to the camera position.
If anyone’s interested in this let me know and i’ll send you a copy of the project and any of the notes i’ve made.”

Na, forget it. That’s way out of scope for expressions. Since calculating Beziers requires calculations of lots of loops for the intermediate nodes/ steps and the tangents (you need to at least iterate 3×3 times inbetween any given two keyframes), it would be terribly slow and prone to problems. Your best bet is to find/create a script that automates your existing procedures and converts the keyframes for you with just one mouse click instead of several, but beyond that I wouldn’t keep my hopes up.

[zhenka] “No its all straight video, no particle systems involved.”

Yepp. But it must have taken them ages to roto out all the plastic barrels and other disturbing objects. On could argue about the originality, but I think it’s still a lot better than many other ads you see on TV. What personally irritates me is the poor choice of music. The other spot was much more innovative and contemporary in that respect.

Actually even with Thinking Particles and Pyrocluster that’s no trivial task – as in any other program. I think – if ever – that would be the only viable option in C4D at the moment. The standard particle system is definitely unsuitable for this. Still, it all hinges on your experience and patience, so if you have immediate needs and don’t have the practice, perhaps look into other options such as composing in real shots of fire or using animated textures.

Sounds to me like this is a legacy plugin that may not be 100% compliant with 4D anymore (I think it is messing up the naming relation since it can’t handle multiple identical names and does not refer to C4D’s internal numeric IDs for objects). Is there any particular reason you are using it? Since you are saying you are using COFFE anyways, can’t you just re-create the functionality there?

Well, you can never be sure until you ask… ;o) Ideally you would create your footage at the maximum resolution the screen supports, but since Windows will automatically fit your video into the desktop resolution and send that to the screen, it’s not that critical. Yes, keeping square pixels is a good idea. You’d only use anamorphic pixels for “true” video which is not relevant in your case.

You could use a simple wiggle expression tied to a slider that’s animated (please be so kind to search the COW on your own, it’s been explained a bazillion times). To get the timing, create a RAM preview and during playback add markers to your timeline with the “x”-key (multiply) on your numpad.

Couldn’t you have asked something simpler? ;o) I think your best bet is to keep everything as “flat” as you possibly can to avoid confusion. Basically you should try and use multiple layers/ masks and animate each of them separately – one for the loops, one for the dangling ends of the bands and so on. This way you will have the most control. Once you are happy with your mask animations and timing and only then should you start using the 3D part. In most cases then a slight bend will suffice. You could also turn some of the layers into 3D layers and position them using AE’s standard methods. If you do that all in a sub-comp, you can then further modify this with effects or build some 3D “shading” as explained in one of my tutorials here and used in my text style presets on my webpage (just follow the link in the signature).

Steve’s suggestions notwithstanding, you could animate a light following your tracked points and use Particular’s path mode to create a “stroke”. This might be much easier than lining up 3DStroke.
