What is VTR Exchange? I’ve been simply unplugging the SDI in on the deck when I’m trying to play out- that may be the best answer after all. I plug it back in when I need to record again.

Thanks for the help. I guess I’m stuck on the procedure. I’m outputting SDI from the IOHD into a PDW-F75 XDCAM deck. I selected “AJA IOHD 1080psf23.98 PreRes 422” as my Video Playback in Final Cut Pro. My secondary format in the IOHD is 1080i 29.97. However, I don’t see it doing any conversion. Have I missed a step? This may be a question for the AJA IOHD forum.

Thank you for your help, Jeremy. I understand what you’re saying. I’m definitely confusing the IOHD. I’m using the IOHD for monitoring for a couple of reasons: I don’t have a true HD monitor, yet. I’m monitoring on an HDTV set with only 1 HDMI in, and I don’t think the F75 gives me a HDMI out. Also, I simultaneously check the picture on an SD monitor, downconverted to 525i. That way I can make sure everything is in 4×3 safe.

I use this deck to ingest to Final Cut Pro, and to write from Final Cut Pro back to disk. That’s why I have 2 cables: IOHD SDI out to F75 SDI in, and F75 SDI out to IOHD SDI in. I think I’m definitely getting some kind of feedback loop. The only time I have trouble is when I try to just play video from the F75 disk. I change the “control” tab in the AJA Control Panel to “Input Passthrough”, and everything goes haywire. I’m monitoring on an LCD TV through HDMI and a Beta SP deck through the analog out (downconverted). If I unplug the SDI in at the F75, it all clears up.

I did try changing “Genlock” on the IOHD to “Video In”, but it didn’t help.

  • By the way, we’re using an AJA IOHD box between FCP and the PDW-F75. It’s firewire into the IOHD box, and SDI into the F75. That way, we can use print to video and record it on the deck. The AJA IOHD is a tremendous help for monitoring, up/down conversions, and more.

  • You can only use the Sony XDCam transfer software to write directly to the PDW-F75. You can, however, set the F75 to work with machine control and output SD DVCam video to FCP. In the menu, change “Interface select/i.link mode” to AV/C instead of FAM. You can then use FCP to control the deck through the firewire. However, it’s my understanding that it’s Standard Def and playback only.

Sony has been promising to allow us to use the XDCam disks for storage like 50gb hard drives. However, the latest I’ve seen is that the upgrades have been pushed back to this summer. Right now, you only have a 500mb “General” folder that you can write to.

My problem was in the preferences in the XDCam Transfer program. Under “Import”, “Add clip title” was checked, and you should leave it unchecked. You also need to check the “Operation” menu in the camera. Make sure under “Clip Title” that “Title” is enabled and under “File Naming” that “Naming Form” is “Free”. That unlocks it from only doing “C****”. Now, rename clips in the XDCam Transfer program under the “Information” tab, and it will write the new name to the disk.

That sounds great. I’m also waiting for it. In the meantime, I understand the PDW-F75 deck should also work as an archive solution. It’s supposed to write data to the XDCam disks if you set it up in the File Access Mode. However, when I’ve tried to do that- I get an error messsage “Error 36- some data cannot be read or written”. It’s useless for that purpose right now. I hope that the ultimate U-1 solution works better.
