Are you using a Mac or a PC?

V. 2.0 has been out for the PC world for about a month. Does anyone know when we might expect an update for Macintosh? Has anyone used the PDW-U1 under Windows in either Boot Camp or VMFusion/Parallels? I’d really like to start using the drive to name my clips and to use the 50gb discs for storage.

Also, you name the clip in the Information panel, not the logging panel.

I had this problem, and I found out that I had checked “Add source name” in the XDCam transfer software preferences/Import. Uncheck “Add source name” and it should accept the clip name. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tip! I didn’t realize that they had released v.2. I downloaded it, but I was using the drive so I couldn’t install it. I’ll install it Monday. Thanks again.

We are just getting started using XDCam and FCP, so I am not an expert. However, we are unable to get the PDW-U1 to write anything to the disk right now. We can’t even rename the disk. It’s my understanding that Sony is expected to update the PDW-U1 in October so that you’ll be able to write anything to the disk. We haven’t tried the rest of your workflow, so I’ll have to let someone else comment on that.

I think that’s the answer. I think under “Filename” the “use clip name” is checked. That’s why it’s asking us to name each clip twice. I’m not in front of my edit bay computer at the moment, so I can’t check it out. I’ll uncheck that preference, and let you know. Thanks.

I didn’t know what the dot meant. Now, I know that I need to save. Thank you for your help. However, changing the clip name in either the Information window or the logging window doesn’t appear to change the name in the other window. So, I need to rename it in the Information column to change it on the disk, and rename it in the Logging column to change it for FCP and the Mac. Is that correct? Renaming clips in one place doesn’t change the name everywhere?

Thanks for your advice. I work for a sports team, and we end up with a couple thousand individual clips at the end of the season. Keeping it all straight is very important, as you can guess. I discovered the first thing I was doing wrong- I still had the clip title setting in the camera set to “Cxxxx”. That’s why I couldn’t rename the clips in the log and transfer software. I changed that to “Free”. My plan, now, is to rename each clip in the log and transfer software before importing it into FCP. We’ll maintain the same names from that point on.
I think the answer to my other question is that I’ll just have to reimport the entire clip if I’m reconnecting in the future. I haven’t seen any tools that allow me to only import the actual media used in the sequence. However, now that I think we’ve solved the clip naming issue, reconnecting in the future shouldn’t be very hard. Thanks for everyone for all your advice. I always check the Cow first when I have a question!

That makes sense. I would still like to rename the clips when I first see them in the Log and Transfer software. I’ve been able to name the disk, but not any of the clips. Is it because I haven’t set the naming mode to “free” in the camera? I’m wondering if it will only accept the format “C0001” because that’s the way it’s set in the menu. I plan on trying that when I get in on Monday. If we can rename the clips from the beginning, I can live with them keeping that name from that point on. It’s just that having clips named “C0065” doesn’t help us very much. Thanks.
