24P question
Posted by Mitch Jordan on February 13, 2009 at 10:19 pmMost of what we produce is 29.97, because it’s for broadcast. We edit everything to and from XDCAM. However, in an experiment, we produced one feature in 24P on the XDCAM. I would like to convert it now to 29.97 so we can play it back in a broadcast. Can anyone help me do this? I’m also using an AJA IOHD box.

February 13, 2009 at 11:11 pmThanks for the help. I guess I’m stuck on the procedure. I’m outputting SDI from the IOHD into a PDW-F75 XDCAM deck. I selected “AJA IOHD 1080psf23.98 PreRes 422” as my Video Playback in Final Cut Pro. My secondary format in the IOHD is 1080i 29.97. However, I don’t see it doing any conversion. Have I missed a step? This may be a question for the AJA IOHD forum.

February 13, 2009 at 11:38 pmYou need to make sure secondary output is selected for “SDI Output 2”. It’s under “Digital Out” in the AJA Control Panel.
I believe you can also just change you Easy Setup and video playback to 1080i and it will work fine. You actually need to do this anyways if you want to downconvert to NTSC.

I have completed editing a film that was shot on a Panasonic DVX100 camera in mixed modes, mostly 24P, some in 24P Advanced and a couple of scenes in 60i. All the tapes were captured at 29.97 in FCP and we cut the film in a 29.97 sequence.
Now we want to upconvert the film to HD and do a frame rate conversion to 23.98. What is the best way to do this?
I realize we should have shot and captured differently. The question now is how best to resolve these issues given that we have locked picture?
Can I use Cinema Tools to remove advanced pull down from 24PA footage and use reverse telecine to remove pulldown from the 24P footage?
I have never used Cinema Tools so any help will be welcome.
As for the 60i material it seems it will be best to convert that through a Terranex to 23.98 and then cut it back into the sequence. There is just a small amount of those shots.
Finally, do I need to worry about audio sync issues as I embark on this conversion process?
Thanks.

February 14, 2009 at 7:12 pmYes it can, so can the Blackmagic cards. It’s a pain though because you need to identify the AA frame in the control panel. I find it much easier to capture at 29.97 and then use Cinema Tools to remove pulldown.
