You only need an AJA or BM and capture to ProRess HQ through HD/SDI-SD.

No Sean, currently there is no direct method for transcoding XDCAM HD (or XDCAM EX) on ingest a la the RED Log and Transfer (L&T) plugin. To make this work, Sony would have to extend their L&T plugin to handle XDCAM HD and the transcode … I’ve no idea if they’ll do this. As noted by Rafael, you can ingest via baseband using a supported I/O device to capture direct to ProRes 422 HQ eg AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox MXO2 etc (not on a laptop for this latter one). There are however alternative options, such as ingesting in the native codec as per normal and then editing native but using ProRes 422 as the render codec and exporting ProRes, or by editing directly with the native files in a ProRes 422 timeline, or using Media Manager to Recompress the captured clips to ProRes post ingest etc All of these options will produce the same eventual quality that would have been achieved had a transcode on ingest option been used.

well, i’m working on a way to make the whole XDcam workflow easier, and file based.

I’ve got an application now that can copy the XDcam material while transcoding to uncompressed QT, or MpegII i frame only, also in a QT wrapper. The transcode is faster than RT. (But your XDcam drive speed is the limiting factor…)

I personally like the MpegII i frame only. Quality stays the same as the original, but I frame only makes editing easier.

Contact me direct if you want more information.

    Sean,

Contact Bouke… it’ll be worth your time.

We work with XDCAM almost exclusively, and Bouke is creating some utilities that will be of
tremendous help to anyone working with that format.

I’ve seen them in action and it’s amazing what can be done with XML programming.

[Sean Davison] “we’re grading in color and XDCam HD aint supported!”
This is absolutely wrong, I CC all my XDCAM footage in Color.
XDCAM is fully supported in Color.
The only limitation is that you can not import the files directly to Color, you need to send them from FC.
I really don’t see the need to transcode XDCAM unless you are working with few layers and your system is limited. I heard as well, that AE have some problems with XDCAM footage.
FC works really well with it. I’m editing since one year ago EX-1 in a MBP with a couple of external eSATAs
and for me is the same than when I was working with DVCam.

I edit XDCAM footage in After Effects all the time without any problems.
