[walter biscardi] “The connector pattern on the cables perfectly matches the connector pattern on both the Apple and Sony monitors.”

    Hi Walter,

I don’t think there is any difference in the connectors for Dual Link vs Single Link (check the url in my post above).

[walter biscardi] “Gefen 75 foot Optical DVI-D cables. Supposedly these cables have been installed in multiple locations and they work. $475/each and we purchased two of them. They don’t work with our G5 and the nVidia Ultra 6800 card.”

    Hi Walter,

Is this a Dual Link issue?
    https://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/dvi/index.htm

    Single Link or Dual Link?

We carry DVI-D cables both in single-link and dual-link configurations. The difference between the two is that the dual-link contains additional twisted pairs, and if both your source equipment and your display are set up to handle dual-link, the use of these additional pairs will lower the bitrate, increasing the effective bandwidth of the interface.

[Michael Horton] “You’re going to have to get a Geffen extension box Walter. Very expensive but it works as advertised.”

    Hi,

I don’t know how expensive the Geffen is but these might work and might be cheaper (optical DVI cables):
    https://www.digitalconnection.com/products/cables/fiber_oc.asp

This unique fiber optical cable system lets your digital display (Plasma TV, Digital Projectors, LCD Monitors, HDTV, etc) extend up to 495 ft.(150 meters) away from the video source based on DVI-D standard. Patented optical conversion technology enables noise-free and high res (UXGA) without the need of external amplifier or power supply.
    20 Meters (66 ft.) $549.00
    30 Meters (100 ft.)$799.00

January 26, 2006 at 9:57 pm in reply to: FYI, SuperDuper did the trick!

[Kevin Monahan] “Why not just use Disk Utility? It performs the same function.”

    Hi Kevin,

I have found that DU does a slightly better job because with Superduper there will be a few minor problems reported with Diskwarrior. Here is what the developer said:
“We’re using Apple utilities, at the lowest level, to do the actual disk erase and file copy, and those utilities are causing the ‘errors’ Disk Warrior is reporting. None of these errors are of any significance, so I truly wouldn’t worry about them: they’ll do no harm.

I know that sounds like ‘passing the buck’, but there really is nothing we can do to prevent the problems: we’ve reported the issue to Apple, and they might be fixed in future OS releases. In the meantime — do not be concerned. Disk Warrior is just being overly ‘sensitive’ in indicating extremely minor things as error (minor things that would be found even in a brand new Mac).”

On the other hand right now if I use DU on my main boot partition it crashes, the partition becomes unbootable and I need to run DW to get it back (not acceptable).

[darren] “I have purchased a Imac 1.8 GHZ with 1.5 gig of ram,

i know that is not suffice for editing on but I just need to do the basics and use it as a learning tool,”

    Hi,

I think an iMac G5 is fine for FCP and DV. This is what a friend who uses one on location said:
I just got my iMac today – infinitely faster than any powerbook I could have bought at three times the cost. I got the cheapest I could find: a new 1.6gHz 17″ with a CDRW/DVD and 256 RAM on eBay. I upgraded to 1GB RAM and got the iLugger bag.”

    and:
Can you capture DV with the G5 iMac to a drive other than the boot drive (one firewire bus)? If so are there any problems or tricks?
“Absolutely no problems. I upgraded the imac’s drive to a 320gb and could capture to that drive but I have a firewire drive workflow. I capture to a FWHD on the iMac. I use a Buslink 6 port FW hub on the imac. I really like the imac G5.

This is the bag he got for location use:

    Hi,

I think you can upgrade from FCP 2.0. If this is not an academic version and the company is legitimate here it is for $150:

[Shane Ross] “The G5 will always win. Dual processors or Quad core vs single processor…no contest.”

    Hi Shane,

The new iMac’s are Dual Core (Dual processor).

The big issue is software. Is QT Intel Native (not yet I don’t think) and if so has it been optimized as well for Intel as for G5?

    Hi,

The Algolith Noise Reduction Plugins for AE are very good:
    https://www.algolith.com/index.php?id=algosuite&L=0

They used to have a one week license so you could try it but I don’t see that on their site. You could ask about it.
