FCP and the Mac Intel Chips
Posted by Phil Schmidt on January 14, 2006 at 6:59 pmI have read on a few boards that FCP will not run on the new MacBook Pros that are coming out next month because of the new intel chip.
Has anyone heard the same? Can you confirm or squash the rumor?
Thanks
Phil

January 14, 2006 at 7:09 pmAll you have to do is keep reading and waiting. No one knows. Anyone who knows isn’t going to tell us anything because of their NDA with Apple.
Our current revs of the FCP line may or may not run on the Rosetta System within the new Macintosh OS for Intel. We have no way of knowing till Apple tells us. I’m guessing the apps will barely limp because the emulation overhead is just too intense. But I know as little as you do.
There is plenty of confusion that stems from the Universal Binary announcements. These will be merely copies of our present software products designed to to run natively on the new Macintosh systems. They will not necessarily be upgrades or new revs.
Apple has done a lousy job of explaining this but, if you spend lots of time on the Net exploring the switch to Intel, you will begin to piece it together. Some of the Mac magazines have decent synopses but do little to satisfy questions like ours about professional appllications.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

January 14, 2006 at 11:16 pmThe Pro applications like Final Cut should be released/updated to run on the new Intel Mac’s at the end of March. Expect new Pro app versions (FCP 6, etc) to likely be released/announced by NAB in late April.
