OT: Apple LCD DVI Cable Length
Posted by Jeff Carpenter on January 26, 2006 at 9:36 pmCan anyone with an Apple LCD screen tell me about how long the DVI cable is? This is one of those odd facts that isn’t reported anywhere online.
No need to be exact, I’m just looking for a good guess give or take a foot.
Thanks!

January 26, 2006 at 10:11 pmMaybe 3 or 4 feet, not very long.
We just tested a 75′ DVI Extension cable ($475 for the cable!) and it did not work. We’re moving the G5 to another room and the run needs to be about 65 feet so we’re still looking for another cable to test.

Would you mind mentioning what company that 75 ft DVI cable
was from that did not work correctly? We are looking to do the
same thing; move the G5 and drives out of the edit room.
Been looking at Gefen cables and extenders.Dan

January 26, 2006 at 11:11 pmYou’re going to have to get a Geffen extension box Walter. Very expensive but it works as advertised. What we use for lafcpug meetings and we run DVI about 120ft

Hi,
I don’t know how expensive the Geffen is but these might work and might be cheaper (optical DVI cables):
https://www.digitalconnection.com/products/cables/fiber_oc.aspThis unique fiber optical cable system lets your digital display (Plasma TV, Digital Projectors, LCD Monitors, HDTV, etc) extend up to 495 ft.(150 meters) away from the video source based on DVI-D standard. Patented optical conversion technology enables noise-free and high res (UXGA) without the need of external amplifier or power supply.
20 Meters (66 ft.) $549.00
30 Meters (100 ft.)$799.00Best Wishes,
Mitch

January 27, 2006 at 12:42 amAfter going through this exercise six months ago, I finally found a combination of Geffen extender plus good cable was the best option. I tried cheap cable and I was only going 30 feet. In the end Cobalt cable (yes expensive) plus the Geffen DVI extender (yes expensive) worked. If going more than that distance, it might be worth testing the DVI over Cat cable extenders or the fibre optic extenders.
Lesser cable & extender combinations gave horibble pixel noise making everything black look awful. If you don’t spend the bucks, the display is unwatchable.

January 27, 2006 at 1:07 amThose fiber cables are more expensive. At least for the length we needed to go.

Those are essentially the cables I just tried. The Gefen cables are fiber optic as well and $475 each. They don’t work as advertised on the G5, at least not here.

January 27, 2006 at 5:29 amWow, I really started a conversation that’s way more than I need!
I hope everyone else learned what they needed from this…I learned that I only need a 3 foot extender cable. Thanks for the info, Walter, and good luck with your (much larger) cable project.
