[HalB] “I realise that I need a G-5 for more rubber on the road but for now, I’m paying the rent with the ol G4 and I’m hoping I can soup it up enuf to learn Motion basics to increase graphics productivity.”

    Hi,

You could probably get at least $1k on Ebay if you do a nice add:
    https://search-completed.ebay.com/dual-g4-1-25_W0QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfisZ2QQfposZ94930QQfromZR10QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfstypeZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsacatZQ2d1QQsadisZ200QQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ2QQsatitleZdualQ20g4Q201Q2e25QQsbrftogZ1QQsoZShowQ20ItemsQQsofocusZso

If you watch for deals on G5’s you can probably pay under $1,700 for a Dual 2.0 like this for example:
    https://dealmac.com/deals/Apple-Power-Mac-G5-2-GHz-Dual-w-MS-Office-mac-2004-for-1-600/110437.html

The G5 will proably come with a better card than your G4 so it won’t cost a lot more than upgrading your card and you will recapture most or all of the difference in resale value.

[Varangian] “”however, the weak link is all the internal SATA cables you’ll need”

yes, that is a concern. And since I would like to setup a rack mount unit, the cables would have to be long.”

    Hi,

That is INTERNAL cables. There are at least two flavors of SATA cables. Cables designed for internal use and cables designed for external use. If you diy you will probably have to use internal cables which will be less reliable. I would look for an inexpensive SATA enclosure that accepts external cables.

February 28, 2006 at 7:50 am in reply to: FCP on a iMac ?????

    Hi,

A friend purchased an iMac G5 for location editing several months ago. This is what he had to say:
“I just got my iMac today – infinitely faster than any powerbook I could have bought at three times the cost. I got the cheapest I could find: a new 1.6gHz 17″ with a CDRW/DVD and 256 RAM on eBay. I upgraded to 1GB RAM and got the iLugger bag.”

    and:
Can you capture DV with the G5 iMac to a drive other than the boot drive (one firewire bus)? If so are there any problems or tricks?
“Absolutely no problems. I upgraded the imac’s drive to a 320gb and could capture to that drive but I have a firewire drive workflow. I capture to a FWHD on the iMac. I use a Buslink 6 port FW hub on the imac. I really like the imac G5.

This is the bag he got for location use:

    Hi,

The Seritek cars are good. You can use one of their cards and a two drive enclosure.

You could also use one of their cars and mount them inside with the G5 Drive Bracket reviewed here (the review has links to other mounting solutions):

    Hi,

I like Toast. I’m using 6.1.1 and Tiger with no issues so I assume Toast 7 would work well also.

February 16, 2006 at 1:40 am in reply to: Storage and Backup suggestions???

[Braden Curtis] “I’ll be changing the way I do a few things as a result of this.”

    Hi,

Good! Not having any backups is very risky. I back up my home directory with Retrospect almost every night (because the backups are incremental [changed or new files are added] this only takes a few minutes. This takes care of project files etc.

Then about once a month or before and after any major changes I backup my entire boot partition (so if a drive goes south or new software causes a problem) I can get back to where I was in a couple of hours.

[Harry] “All my old prefs and stuff will get shoved into a folder called “old system” or something.”

    Hi Harry,

Actually almost everything will already be there with the “Archive and Install” (be sure that you check the box labled something similar to “save network settings and preferences”).

I think I only needed to reinstall a printer, a third party menu program that displays the date AND time in the menu bar, and startup sound to mute the boot chime.

  • Hi,

Yes you can use the Restore tab in DU to do this.

If its not a bootable drive you can just do it by dragging the folders in the finder.
