  • new to fcp !!!!! playback issue on IMAC G5

Posted by Video Editor on January 19, 2006 at 9:39 am

I have purchased a Imac 1.8 GHZ with 1.5 gig of ram,

i know that is not suffice for editing on but I just need to do the basics and use it as a learning tool, however I have brought QT files in that I rendered in My Discreet edit* and they play back fine in the source window however when I edit it into a timeline I have to render it, i was told there is a way i can view in real time instead of rendering is this correct !!!!…..

It is set up in a Pal DV job, any suggestions or am i stuck with rendering to watch the edits back !!!! until I can get the full spec G5 Tower that I want to get latter in the year……

    Many thanks

#1 – You need to store your footage on an external firewire drive to ensure smooth playback. Never put media files on your main system drive.

#2 – HOW did you export these files from Descreet? What format are they? In order to not have to render, your sequence settings MUST MATCH the clip settings exactly…codec, frame rate, dimensions.

I just exported via QuickTime sorenson video from discreet edit for best quality just to play with on the imac…….

Would having them on a external drive let me play the timeline back in real time !!!! or is that just the machine limitation…

Like i said this is just a stop gap to enable me to learn the basics and play around and get up to speed with the software……..

I have a few jobs lined up and like the looks of FCP now, so thought i would take the plunge !!!,

    thanks in advance

Your Sequence settings MUST match exactly your video clip settings. If not, FCP will need to render every clip for playback.

That is, if you have a DV-NTSC timeline and you’re putting your Sorenson clips in there, that’s a mis-match between the clip and the sequence so FCP will render each clip.

Sorenson isn’t the best quality. Web compression, not edit compression.

    Export as DV/NTSC…at least.

    Hi,

I think an iMac G5 is fine for FCP and DV. This is what a friend who uses one on location said:
I just got my iMac today – infinitely faster than any powerbook I could have bought at three times the cost. I got the cheapest I could find: a new 1.6gHz 17″ with a CDRW/DVD and 256 RAM on eBay. I upgraded to 1GB RAM and got the iLugger bag.”

    and:
Can you capture DV with the G5 iMac to a drive other than the boot drive (one firewire bus)? If so are there any problems or tricks?
“Absolutely no problems. I upgraded the imac’s drive to a 320gb and could capture to that drive but I have a firewire drive workflow. I capture to a FWHD on the iMac. I use a Buslink 6 port FW hub on the imac. I really like the imac G5.

This is the bag he got for location use:

    Best Wishes,
