[Shane Ross] “BUT…do not, repeat…do not capture to the drive that comes with the computer. You will need to purchase another drive to capture your footage onto. External firewire drive will work fine with DV. The main system drive is not recommended as it will drop frames all the time as the system accesses system resources from time to time.”
While this is ordinarily good advice, we have observed something odd with some flat panel iMacs. In some cases capturing to an external drive always got dropped frames, where capturing to the internal hard drive didn’t drop frames. Then the reverse occurred when trying to play back out. So it was capture to the system drive, then drag it to the external before editing. Strange I know, but we’ve seen it pretty regularly on some of the iMacs. Hopefully these newer ones will move past that…

July 6, 2005 at 3:21 pm in reply to: Uncompressed 10-bit D-Beta from a FW800 drive-should I trust this?I think you’re pushing it. I’ve seen 8-bit work with that, but I guess we should define what working is. I don’t consider a single stream as “working”.
What does work quite well is a four drive SATA raid which is cheap and more desirable in our minds than SCSI. We get several tracks of RT with the four drive version…
FWIW, we’ve seen dropped frames without FCP reporting this using a single FW drive trying to 10 bit.

[walter biscardi] “So far all of my graphics are coming in very cleanly to FCP 5.0.”
I’m with Walter on this one… my graphics are clean. I even took and old 4.5 project, duplicated it three times, and then converted each of the three copies using one of the three different methods. I also brought the files into a native 5.0 project. So, I now have five different versions of the same project, and graphics and titles all look fine in each one of them.
I’m wondering if we need to start posting what machine, graphics card, ram config we all use so we can see if there is some commonality with those who are experiencing this problem?

[Jerry Hofmann] “Post more about your setup, what are the specs of your scratch disk, and what exactly was the source material on DV or DVCAM or? “
Knowing what camera it was shot on and what he used to capture from would also help…

I think you’ll find them pretty tolerant. I’ve seen (and been involved in) some threads that got a little heated, that were never removed. They do pull the seriously over-the-top ones though in an attempt to keep the signal to noise ratio workable. If you think about it, most boards start out great and then over time the S/N ratio rises to the point where it’s no longer a useful forum. The COW has been around a long time and has managed to avoid that… so I’d say what they’re doing is working…

[Tom Wolsky] “Faster is relative. Bit for bit, USB2 may be faster at any given moment. Faster for a constant stream of high density data, no.”
Nicely said Tom. I always get asked this (usually by PC users). Unlike FW, USB sends the data in groups of buckets that don’t seem to be good for video, where we need the consistent stream at all times…

My original 23″ Cinema display (ADC) is connected to the ADC connector on the 800, and (using an Apple DVI to ADC converter), the 17″ is connected as well…
