Uncompressed 10-bit D-Beta from a FW800 drive-should I trust this?
Posted by Beelaster on July 5, 2005 at 7:45 pmI onlined my show using Uncompressed 10-bit SD to my LaCie FW 800 drive stack and all seems to be well. I thought this wasn’t supposed to work due to FW throughput, etc.
I am a newb and I wonder whether I should celebrate or be cautiously optimistic.
Has this situation worked for anyone else?
Thanks for your replies!

July 5, 2005 at 8:01 pm10bit capture works fine on LaCie, but you will only have a single stream of video and your performance will definitely be a bit slow.
If your work will consist primarily of 10bit, you’ll want something faster like a Fibre Channel array. I run my 10bit material primarily on my Medea FCR2X 2TB array.

July 5, 2005 at 9:04 pmThanks Walter-
You are right about one stream-I’m finding that anywhere I want to crossfade I have to be really careful about length..It’s like nip and tuck central…I hope an audio mixdown will ease the pressure (right now I’m using 10 tracks audio/3 tracks video)
I would love a Fibre Channel setup. Maybe I’ll get my wings after this gig. =)
FWIW, I tried Automatic Duck-ing my show onto a Media Composer and ended up ending the session and bringing my G5/Aja to the Post House to online directly using their D-Beta deck. Things went just fine.
I think this makes me an official FCP convert.
Thanks for your help!

July 5, 2005 at 10:30 pmThe time remap settings are not working on this time line and I wonder whether that is a result of it’s 10bit setting…

July 6, 2005 at 3:21 pmI think you’re pushing it. I’ve seen 8-bit work with that, but I guess we should define what working is. I don’t consider a single stream as “working”.
What does work quite well is a four drive SATA raid which is cheap and more desirable in our minds than SCSI. We get several tracks of RT with the four drive version…
FWIW, we’ve seen dropped frames without FCP reporting this using a single FW drive trying to 10 bit.

Thanks for writing back- As it turns out, I felt like we were too much in the danger zone for comfort. You are right- 10-bit will play, but as soon as you apply a transition, the beauty is over. It’s ok. I had my doubts, but had to try it to be sure.
I so want a SATA array. It is the very next thing on the list. When the time came to online, we ended up bringing our rig to the post house because Automatic Duck to AVID disappointed and they didn’t have FCPHD yet. So. How much fun to see our little monster driving the $40K decks effortlessly. Such a tease.
In the end, we laid off an 8bit DVCAM Master for Fest Apps and all is well. The film looks great and we have a little window to update things.
Um… the long response to yr concise post.
