I was talking the other day to a couple of people who post here and they told me that a lot of posting are now being screened for content and that this span story was wash of BS and more about a payola scam, now i now this is a private internet forum, but the screening of postings is a bit much. so whats the deal? I believe the posting part cause my posting the other day never went up and all I asked about was some plugins, so are the posting being screened because someone is making money and does not want a product trashed or another to highly praised. just wondering cause this is what the topic of the conversation was.

Yes, this is a private internet forum and if a post strays outside the Code of Conduct it will be removed. If a post is found to be counterproductive to the Cow, it will be removed. Ron and Kathlyn have built a tremendous creative community here and one of the reasons for that is they monitor all the forums and remove any posts that need to be removed for whatever reason.

There is a long legal history, and a great benefit to society, in prohibiting libel and slander.

Such statements can result in serious civil penalties, and with good reason. Making false statements that affect the reputation of a person or business entity can have a catastrophic effect on them.

The internet is a form of publishing, and must abide by the same legal and moral conventions as any other publishing.

Free speech is not hate speech, and it is rightfully restricted to truthful statements.

I think you’ll find them pretty tolerant. I’ve seen (and been involved in) some threads that got a little heated, that were never removed. They do pull the seriously over-the-top ones though in an attempt to keep the signal to noise ratio workable. If you think about it, most boards start out great and then over time the S/N ratio rises to the point where it’s no longer a useful forum. The COW has been around a long time and has managed to avoid that… so I’d say what they’re doing is working…

There’s nothing free about speech on the Internet. That’s a curiously American cultural affectation. However, information tends to want to be free regardless of its veracity. Once it hits the Net it’s hard to control.

For the same reason Disneyland can demand to search your purse upon entering the Happiest Place on Earth (or deny you entry), there’s absolutely no freedom on a privately held Web site. If you want unmoderated and unrestricted content, you go to Usenet.
