And let’s not forget that AJA products tend to be rock solid, whereas the original MXO was a bugfest. I tested many drivers with issues. At one point it got so bad that I had to wipe the drive and start over on the MBP 17, due to the damage from repeated crashing. I found myself getting all nostalgic… reminded me of my experiences with the RTmac… 🙂
Perhaps the MXO2 will be different, though…

That’s not the reason. It’s an outdated business model and an inefficient organizational structure. Avid is also a tiny company compared to Matrox or Apple, which makes R&D and mfg costs less competitive.

Not necessarily. Some of us have been down that road and know the fallacy of that approach.

Hardware acceleration is for people who like to get stuck with a fixed feature set and rapidly obsoleting hardware. I have my PhD in that approach… no thanks. I make much more money now, and I’ve never had a customer complain about our systems being slow… maybe our editors are faster?

Actually, it’ll just make series of smaller files in the Capture scratch folder that are white and have no icons, but the 2GB file limit won’t stop you from capturing a larger file. I inadvertently did that last week when a friend asked me to capture some footage for them to a firewire drive that they dropped off. After capture, I discovered all those small files and realized it was a PC formatted drive…

And how does having every single FCP owner buy Premiere help Apple. If I was them I’d be concerned. The problem with having Premiere/Encore is that you discover a number of things it can do that Apple can’t. Things like easily making flash files while you’re making a BRD. If I was Apple, I’d nip this in the bud and damned quickly…

I saw Steve Martin of Ripple Training do this, not Apple. If Brian from Apple got up there, then it’s because people like me cornered him BEFORE the meeting and made a big damn deal of it. I asked him point blank: How could Apple be the first company to offer SD DVD burning, and then manage to not only be the last to offer BR DVD burning, but be the ONLY company that doesn’t currently have it? Not to put too fine a point on things…
Walter is right on target. I don’t have any clients demanding RED, and at the same time, ALL of my clients are demanding BR DVDs.

If I had to guess, I’d say it’s happening at the Sorenson step. I use the same camera and do not have this problem. Of course, I’m on 6.0.2.
Skip Sorenson and use compressor to make something. Better still, get Episode, then you can make WMV, Flash, whatever. I’m guessing you won’t see the problem then…

I have been flogging a 7 drive model for 4-5 years now. Very solid product. I’ve changed out one burner (it pays to have a spare before that model of drive is discontinued, since they all have to be matched drives).
This week I’m replacing the reader, because the new OptiArc burner in the new 2008 8-core creates discs that this old reader can’t read. At NAB the people at the ILY booth said, “just replace the reader with a newer 16X DVD-ROM drive and my unit will still work”. Very helpful…
