Shane, it’s FCP 6.0.3 and QT 7.4.5 that introduced the Livetype problem, so it makes sense that you don’t see the problem.
OTOH, 6.0.3/7.4.5 brought more stability to third party plugins and fixed most of the Primatte issues, so it’s a catch 22…

So I understand, you have K3’s in these machines, you have 10.5.2, FCP 6.03 & QT 7.4.5 and when you make things in Livetype, they render out and display properly? If so, then you are unique.
Are you using third party plugins like Primatte? Have you rendered very long sequences, like 30 minutes worth where the whole timeline needs rendering? This would be good to know…

Usually on the newest macs it is a RAM issue like 90% of the time, if you are just buying boxes from cheapest_I_can_find.com you are not getting the benefit of having a knowledgeable tech set up your machine, so you have to find out these issues yourself.
Pull all of the RAM and RE-Seat It in a different order – even if there are only 2 sticks of it.”
You’re making some assumptions here Gary, and right now there are several people who know both of us and our skill levels and are groaning when reading your post…

Everything done in LT displays a complete black frame when rendered. Existing projects with LT elements play fine, unless you do anything that requires them to be re-rendered. Anything created in LT displays as a full black frame, but if you move it to a non 8-core MacPro it displays fine. Files made on other computers and transferred to the 8-core display all black as well.
A friend with a 2007 quad MacPro is having the same problem. It’s on IMUG and the Apple LT forum. It’s not a very well kept secret…

Let’s see, there are those official Apple tech bulletins alluding to issues… like the fact that you cannot mix ram module sizes if you want FCP to render without crashing or you want all your plugins to work…
Oh. and do NOT install FCP 6.0.3 or QT 7.4.5… not if you want anything in LiveType to work…

Yes, it is broken, especially on the 2008 8-core Mac Pro machines. Everything made in Livetype that gets rendered in FCP 6.0.3/QT 7.4.5 renders solid black. It works fine on the Intel MBP.
Old projects that are opened, play fine as long as you don’t change anything and render it…
As Walter pointed out, the FCP beta testing program is in serious need of some changes. I can see not being able to test third party stuff, but how in the hell can you release updates without testing it on your own stuff… you know, the stuff hat comes in the same box as FCP!

AJA has yet to come up with a fix for this for us. We cannot have both SDI cables connected to the HDcam 2000 deck at the same time without getting a feedback loop. We’ve tried every combo… tried a GEN-10… nothing allows it to work…
They have (in a cryptic tone) intimated that the K3 uses a completely different approach to sync and that it’s much more sensitive than any of the other Kona cards. Not sure what that means, but is apparently intended to have us lower our expectations for an eventual fix.

So much of this depends on the machine. You’re using a G5 which will make things fairly easy, as many posters have already said.
If you have a new 2008 Eight-core machine and a Kona, things are a lot less smooth. These new 8-core machines are in a whole category by themselves. I would not recommend FCP 6.0.3 or QT 7.4.5 on these new machines. Anything made in Livetype (or made on another Mac) renders solid black… it all worked fine until those updates. That combo works fine on every machine we have except the 2008 8-core with the K3. In addition, the RAM configs are as serious as a heart attack on these new 8-cores. Matched ram modules of a single size are almost an unwritten requirement if you want FCP and 3rd party plugins to work…
Perhaps the new Kona drivers will help with some of this… we certainly hope so, since Apple is too focused on the iToy line to fix the FCP side anytime soon…
