Same here

Kona 5.1 NDD driver, I use this version w/o the Mac desktop function , the current computers really do not like this functionality with certain Nvida graphics card.

But these setting and choices also depend on what you are doing, Newer cameras need the latest versions of the OS or Applications.

So much of this depends on the machine. You’re using a G5 which will make things fairly easy, as many posters have already said.

If you have a new 2008 Eight-core machine and a Kona, things are a lot less smooth. These new 8-core machines are in a whole category by themselves. I would not recommend FCP 6.0.3 or QT 7.4.5 on these new machines. Anything made in Livetype (or made on another Mac) renders solid black… it all worked fine until those updates. That combo works fine on every machine we have except the 2008 8-core with the K3. In addition, the RAM configs are as serious as a heart attack on these new 8-cores. Matched ram modules of a single size are almost an unwritten requirement if you want FCP and 3rd party plugins to work…

Perhaps the new Kona drivers will help with some of this… we certainly hope so, since Apple is too focused on the iToy line to fix the FCP side anytime soon…

I must disagree with Mitch.

We have five Early 2008 8 core machines (2.8 and 3.2 Ghz) running with all OS & QT updates installed and the NDD drivers from AJA, we have seen none of the issues he has. Very stable.

yes
some dealers know how to work around the issues when they config your machine, and if you config yourself you have no idea what to look for,

Usually on the newest macs it is a RAM issue like 90% of the time, if you are just buying boxes from cheapest_I_can_find.com you are not getting the benefit of having a knowledgeable tech set up your machine, so you have to find out these issues yourself.

Pull all of the RAM and RE-Seat It in a different order – even if there are only 2 sticks of it.

So I understand, you have K3’s in these machines, you have 10.5.2, FCP 6.03 & QT 7.4.5 and when you make things in Livetype, they render out and display properly? If so, then you are unique.

Are you using third party plugins like Primatte? Have you rendered very long sequences, like 30 minutes worth where the whole timeline needs rendering? This would be good to know…

Not Primatte… but yes we have rendered very long sequences, usually not one effect on the entire sequence but LiveType segments and other effects that require the whole thing to be rendered.

I have to disagree with Mitch too. I have one of the new Jan 2008 OctoCore 3.0Ghz MacPros…running 10.5.2 and QT 7.4.1 (not going to 7.4.5 yet) and things are running smooth. Kona 5.1 drivers, FCP 6.0.2…NOT 6.0.3.

But I also don’t use Livetype, so…

Shane, it’s FCP 6.0.3 and QT 7.4.5 that introduced the Livetype problem, so it makes sense that you don’t see the problem.

OTOH, 6.0.3/7.4.5 brought more stability to third party plugins and fixed most of the Primatte issues, so it’s a catch 22…
