Replacing G5 with 2008 2.8 Octo
Posted by Dave Jenkins on May 5, 2008 at 2:51 pmI am planning on replacing one of our G5’s with a 2008 2.8 Octo. Is anyone using one of these without any problems? I will be using this with FCS 2, AJA LHe, ATTO UDL5 SCSI card and a Huge raid. I have read the posts of people having problems, Just wanted to here some success stories.
Thanks Dave

May 5, 2008 at 3:45 pmThere will always be people who have problems. Depends on the configuration, the drives used…and the pilot at the wheel. But I haven’t heard of any widespread issues with the MacPro Octos. If there were, I wouldn’t have bought one.
We have four of the 3.0s in the office…two older April 2007 models running Tiger and then my Jan 2008 model running Leopard. All on XSAN 2 running Leopard. No issues to report.

May 5, 2008 at 4:43 pmI just upgraded from a Dual 2.3 G5 running FCP 5.1.4 to an Octo 2.8 running FCS Studio 2. No problems so far other than a few Leopard issues with older drivers and such. FCP seems to be behaving well without any problems so far.

May 5, 2008 at 4:47 pmMy only comment is, if you are using the same hardware from the G5, make sure the PCI cards are the correct fit. I can’t remember when Apple changed the PCI from PCI-X to PCI-e.
Enjoy the speed.

Let’s see, there are those official Apple tech bulletins alluding to issues… like the fact that you cannot mix ram module sizes if you want FCP to render without crashing or you want all your plugins to work…
Oh. and do NOT install FCP 6.0.3 or QT 7.4.5… not if you want anything in LiveType to work…

May 5, 2008 at 6:07 pmHmmm…
That’s weird. I’m not sure just what version of Quicktime I have running on the new machine (it’s my home machine and I’m not at home right now) but I did all of the usual software updates after installing Studio 2 and I haven’t had any problems at all with Livetype and I use it quite a bit. What kind of issues are there?

May 6, 2008 at 12:32 amEverything done in LT displays a complete black frame when rendered. Existing projects with LT elements play fine, unless you do anything that requires them to be re-rendered. Anything created in LT displays as a full black frame, but if you move it to a non 8-core MacPro it displays fine. Files made on other computers and transferred to the 8-core display all black as well.
A friend with a 2007 quad MacPro is having the same problem. It’s on IMUG and the Apple LT forum. It’s not a very well kept secret…
