I knew Apple was not present in NAB this year but I still hoped that some news would come from Apple’s usual collaborators (Aja, Decklink, Red,etc…) regarding Final Cut. I have to wait for the next keynote I suppose.

But It would have been “cool” to have some info about:

-Blu-ray support in DVDstudio (about “frigging time” I say)
-Improved Media-manager (does Final Cut server count?)
    -AVCHD ingest
-Improved integration between FCP and Color
    -Gamma shift weirdness ENDED!!!!!

    And of course my fabe:

-WHERE’S THE $·%”(/·&(%· substitute for Shake. Shake on an Intel is pointless if you cannot use uncompressed and proress CORRECTLY

Apple was all over NAB in a ton of booths… just not one with their name on it.

There were other announcements and some betas shown of what the FCP has been up to, and the Color team… Read the Red thread below for particulars. I was showing the new workflow for RED in FCP in AJA’s booth in fact. RED showed the new Color Room for RED in their booth with the Log and Capture plugin I was showing… So there were some announcements.

FC Server was shown to the FCP group’s Supermeet… and it looks wonderful.. a nice and needed addition to the line.

All of what you ask for is likely coming.. when? dunno, but not too far off don’t think.

RED enhanced workflow was the big announcements from Apple and AJA. So if you’re really amped up to use RED or are already using RED, there were good announcements.

Otherwise, business as usual right now with Studio. Nothing really to report. We can speculate all we want on what “might be coming” but without concrete information from Apple, it’s all just conjecture and rumor. Shame Apple couldn’t lay out a “Roadmap for Studio” like they were so excited to do with the iPhone.

Brian was there with a notepad, writing down what people want to see. I asked him if he could put another hash mark next to the “Blue-ray support” item that I was certain was already there. His response indicated that I was maybe the second person to mention this. WTF? Worse, he didn’t seem to personally understand it’s importance. Given the high opinion of Brian that we all have, I was a bit shocked by this.

Fortunately, Steve martin closed his presentation by asking us all to demonstrate (with applause) our interest in Blue-ray NOW, and the resulting thunder was loud enough to bring down the chandeliers! There is no way that the FCP team can deny this now.

I also mentioned to Brian “better media management”. he asked what I would like to see. I said “what AVID has”, but for now I’d settle for a “consolidation that works better” and isn’t such a nailbiter when using it.

I agree… I’d really like to know just how many engineers are really still in the Pro Apps division. Given how slowly things are being fixed, I really can’t see it being that many people anymore…

Dare I say they would never do that because people that use these products to make a living on would demand answers and Apple would be held accountable for a real pathway, instead of the norm now, where they add all these great bells and whistles and dont take care of simple things that everyone has been stammering for for years now…very Avid like in that you just add on top of old things and never really fix the foundation with which its been built upon, and we all know how that turns out for most things in life…..

The bigger problem as I see it is an incredibly miniscule beta program. Way too few people testing and offering input on what needs to be done. So we all complain on here, and Apple does read our complaints, but if it’s not an issue with the beta testers, then you won’t see things fixed.

Witness me discussing directly with the FCP Team about drop frame support for 720p. Panasonic Cameras shot 720p drop frame since day one. I started dialogue with Apple three years ago and it was finally added to the app with FCP 6.0.2.

Apparently something like this wasn’t an issue with the beta team. It was just an issue with those of us trying to produce NTSC Drop Frame based HD Broadcast programming for US Networks. So we just had to create all kinds of workarounds to time out our shows correctly.

I’m aware of the improved workflow for the RED cam.

I’ve already had three RED-related jobs (a videoclip, a museum exhibition and a shortfilm) and having suffered the ultra-buggy REDCINE program I appreciate the improvement.

But I’ve had more than a dozen jobs where the listed features I was asking for would have been
    “ESSENTIAL”

I might not be alone stating that I’m worried that Apple priorities are more into the phone bussiness

You certainly got that right Walter. We just got another example this week. FCP 6.0.3 breaks LiveType. I can understand that you can’t check compatibility with every third party program, but not working with your own programs? When Word has a problem with Excel, MS gets lambasted. How did Livetype being busted get past QA?
