You certainly got that right Walter. We just got another example this week. FCP 6.0.3 breaks LiveType. I can understand that you can’t check compatibility with every third party program, but not working with your own programs? When Word has a problem with Excel, MS gets lambasted. How did Livetype being busted get past QA?

Brian was there with a notepad, writing down what people want to see. I asked him if he could put another hash mark next to the “Blue-ray support” item that I was certain was already there. His response indicated that I was maybe the second person to mention this. WTF? Worse, he didn’t seem to personally understand it’s importance. Given the high opinion of Brian that we all have, I was a bit shocked by this.
Fortunately, Steve martin closed his presentation by asking us all to demonstrate (with applause) our interest in Blue-ray NOW, and the resulting thunder was loud enough to bring down the chandeliers! There is no way that the FCP team can deny this now.
I also mentioned to Brian “better media management”. he asked what I would like to see. I said “what AVID has”, but for now I’d settle for a “consolidation that works better” and isn’t such a nailbiter when using it.

I agree… I’d really like to know just how many engineers are really still in the Pro Apps division. Given how slowly things are being fixed, I really can’t see it being that many people anymore…

Well, this interesting. Livetype is broken on the new 8-core, but works fine on the Intel MBP 17. Both have FCP 6.0.3 and QT 7.4.5 and 10.5.2. Both have had the FCP preferences thrown out.
Here’s where it gets fun. If I take the .ipr file from the MBP 17 that displays fine in FCP and move it to the 8-core tower, the screen is solid black… the same as when I make one in Livetype on the 8-core. Even stranger, the files made on the 8-core that don’t work, display fine on the MBP 17.
This has to be a display issue on the 8-core, so there is one of two possibilities that I can think of. One, it’s because we have a Kona 3 in the 8-core… or two, it’s the optional custom order 8800 video card in the 8-core that Apple offers.
I guess I’ll contact AJA and try the 5.1NDD drivers and see if that helps…

Yes, this is an Intel MacPro. More to the point, it’s a 2008 8-core, which were discovering is a beast all to it’s own. Not being able to mix different sized ram modules is a new twist…

[Michael Sacci] “Lets say the timeline is on the Kona 3 system – set the output SD to SD to V Crop on this system. Then on your LH system set FCP to capture with non-controllable device and with a SD anamorphic codec. Start playing the sequence (with a few seconds of black for the real video starts) hit capture now on the LH (record) system. When done you should have a true anamorphic video clip. This should look a lot better then scaling in FCP, plus it is done in real time. “
To make sure I understand, is this to convert just the 4:3 LB video to true anamorphic, or is this to convert the final edited piece, which is a mix of 16:9 anamorphic and 4:3 LB (edited in a 4:3 timeline)?

This will probably do much better than software distort and since both angles have done through the same process it should match up much better.

We have a Kona LH in the G5 and a Kona 3 in the 8-core Intel. Maybe I’m just tired, but I’m not sure I completely understand this process, but it sounds interesting. Both have SDI. I hate to impose, but could you describe the steps to this process?

[Daniel Weber] “I took a project from the machine with Tiger and tried to render it on my Leopard machine (2.8 Quad, GeForce 8800, 6 gigs ram). Final Cut crashed with an error message saying that it may have to do with the “ProGraphics” plug in. When I looked at the crash log it pointed to the Nvidia card.
Both systems are running 7.4.1.
I can’t believe that Apple released a version of Quicktime that enabled video rentals but killed all of the people doing production!!! “
I too have a 2.8 8-core with the 8800 and am having many crashes in FCP. When it crashes it points to any effect as the problem. I’m beginning to wonder about the 8800?
