Yeah, I’m reading about problems everywhere… COW, MacFixIT, Apple, etc. QT 7.5.5 seems to be listed as the culprit, thought it looks like iTunes 8 has it’s own share of uglies. I haven’t installed those on any of my machines yet, but if I want the new iPhone firmware, I apparently have to install them…
After tne 7.4.5 QT meltdown, I’m tending to stay away from any QT update that comes out for the iPhone or a new iTunes. Seems to be a problem…

I think more of us are interested in the 6.1 drivers than the Premiere drivers. Development should start slowing down on the FCP side now anyways, so that may explain the lack of excitement… and yes Walter, I know you disagree…

We found out the hard way that the Tascam 1082 doesn’t work with Kona cards. We spent an inordinate amount of time trying to solve the problem before someone at Tascam admitted the problem. They could offer no solution, nor any time frame. That was over a year ago. Our solution was the Mackie MCU which worked perfectly.
So, do you know if they got the Tascam working with the Konas yet?
BTW, a friend just had to have the firewire port replaced on the Tascam. Tascam was nice about it and acknowledged that it has occurred. The good news was that they wanted under $200 to fix it…

That’s what I understand as well. Apparently, the local college will be stuck at FCP 6.0, as it needs to be limited to that older version of QT to be able to work with Avid. This is how it’s always been… Avid’s glacial pace of updating always holds FCP back… was that way for the 5-1/2 years I taught FCP and it apparently hasn’t changed in the last year…

When I send black to my 1700 it is completely black… no purple and no hot spot…

Walter, I upgrade the 8-core to 10.5.4 and FCP 6.0.4 so I could test. If I disable a font in FontBook and then restart the machine, it does not show up in the Boris title tool, so it appears that the FontBook is working on our 2.8 8-core……

Well, that sort of confirms the experiences of people like Walter and myself. What was it they used to say about odd kids in school… “they’re special”. Well, I guess the 8-core is “special”.
FWIW, we’ve had problems here as well. Most of the companies don’t have an 8-core machine to test on, and when they do, it’s a 2007 model, whose architecture is completely different…

We use Primatte as well. In the archive you’ll find a thred with all of the issues we were having on our 2008 8-core MacPro. It worked like a dream on all the other machines, including the MBP. We had to disable the Kona output to get it to work. It turned out o be something caused by FCP 6.0.2 and QT 7.4.5. When 6.0.3/7.5 came out everything worked again. We have refused to install 6.0.4 and 10.5.4 because of these problems.
Primatte Pro does take awhile to render, but I never got that long a render… but I wasn’t using the animation codec. Ours was DVCpro HD footage, and a 28.5 minute program did take a few hours to render the whole thing… but to be fair it was many layers of composited items, all of which had transparency adjustments.
This keyer works better than anything I have ever used, and I own a lot of keying software. One tip I will give you is that we occasionally got strange results using a garbage matte. Not all the time, but in the process of testing, we discovered that Primatte doesn’t need one. Even with green screen that is really uneven, Primtte nails it. We came to the conclusion that it was the garbage matte causing the problem, because at that point, anything from Apple (Livetype, their keyer, etc.) that had an alpha channel was causing the problem.
So in the end, the 2008 8-cores always seem to have some problem that none of the other machines have, and two, everytime Apple changes QT, we seem to have issues in FCP with something. As I’ve said on many occasions, we need two versions of QT… one for the pro apps and one for the iToys.

I’ll second that. The Octo machines are a breed unto themselves. We have had a series of issues that did not plague any other machines. I can also tell you that the 2007 8-core did not have the issues that we were experiencing with our 2008 models, which made troubleshooting difficult, since most of the vendors were testing on the 2007 model.
I intentionally did not install 6.0.4 or 10.4.5 on the Octo… it’s on everything else. So, unfortunately, I can’t confirm or deny it for you. However, given your fontbook info, I’m going to check the octo. If it’s doing that as ell, perhaps that was our problem as well.

As reported, yes it has YUV, and yes SDI is an option. I have used one for a year. Had an early development model first and now a production model. It works well and I hardly ever shoot without it. Having a waveform monitor is crucial in many cases and has saved us more than once… i.e. what looked okay vs. what the waveform indicated. The WF is always right.
This being a newer model, it has the red edge focus enhancement. This works very well as well… especially in bright sunlight.
