I have had tapes get tangled up in the transport and managed to remove all the tape (carefully) with tweezers and a light.

In the Adobe Media Encoder, choose H.264 as the Format and “HDTV 1080p 25 High Quality” as the Preset…that is 32 Mbps, 2 pass VBR.

10 Mbps is about half of what it should be. Try VBR 2 pass, Target=20Mbps, Max =25.

NO! The AVCHD format may or may not ever be compatible with Premiere CS3. If it is, editing will require a very stout Quad 4 PC something.
Stick with the HDV format and something like a Canon HV30.

Some cameras have a setting in the menu, like DV-In. Can you just play the timeline and see the video in the camera’s LCD?
