Which Camera?
Posted by Tatum Dutile on July 21, 2008 at 1:42 pmI’m looking at the HDR-SR12 120GB High Definition Handycam Camcorder and will complete all editing in Premiere Pro. Is this a compatible camera for this software? It costs around $1200. Is there a better quality camera in this price range?
Thanks so much!Tatum Dutile

NO! The AVCHD format may or may not ever be compatible with Premiere CS3. If it is, editing will require a very stout Quad 4 PC something.
Stick with the HDV format and something like a Canon HV30.

July 21, 2008 at 6:35 pmThe AVCHD footage that camera shoots is not compatible with Premiere Pro. It is possible to get a program like UpShift from Vaast that will convert the AVCHD into HDV that can be used in Premiere Pro.
Just keep in mind that the footage from that type of camera is not designed to be edited, just watched. Which is why it needs conversion.

July 22, 2008 at 2:34 amAgree with the above. Check with Sony, I think last I’ve heard they made a plugin that would allow import into Premiere (likely after a conversion and further quality loss)
All in all, this is a great camera for the price, but the codec is a bad choice.

July 23, 2008 at 7:43 pmAdobe is going to make Premiere edit AVCHD natively in the near future. Seen on Adobe TV.

July 29, 2008 at 9:46 pmThanks for the responses. I’m still looking at the cameras now, but what about the Sony HVR-HD1000U Digital High Definition HDV Camcorder? Is this a good camera? I’m actually a professional still photographer and don’t know enough about video… Do these upper end cameras have interchangable lenses? Does the Sony?
I appreciate the help.
