Go to a Best Buy and try to buy a 4:3 TV. I have been producing all corporate (and now TV spots) in 16:9.
Unless the client asks for 4:3 (and they don’t) I would stick with 16:9. Of course I try to shoot with 4:3 in mind just in case (Never been an issue) And progressive is also the way to go. Most corporate clients are playing files or DVD’s in laptops.

LOL, – Before NAB 2008 someone representing Apple called me and asked what Apple products I use and would I like to provide some feedback. Of course she was reading from a script and probably had no idea what the hell I was talking about. At least my Apple does not crash and screw up projects like my 4 other PC based editing systems did. I am really glad I went to Apple – it just irkes me that I have to “fallback”
and use something like Encore to produce a Blu-Ray. The future may be downloading. But my reality today and probably the next few years is dealing with clients that are PC based and can only view low-res WMV files on their crappy PC laptops. Of course they all drool when they see 1080p files playing on my monitor. I have converted some to the MAC. I walked into a clients office the other day and he was viewing the last edit I sent him on a shiny new 17″ MacBook Pro. There is still hope.

It may not be a concern to Apple. It is a concern to me. And I am the customer.

Give it a try with a short test…
But even if you deck only outputs HD-SDI
you should be able to tell FCP how you want to capture.

As long as you stay DVCPRO HD you should not see a visual difference.
You just have to make sure you are conforming back and forth to many times/

    Thats what I said…
If Scott shot 720 24p NOT 24pN then it would show up as 29.97….
I have the largest stock footage collection of 720 23.976 and 1080 23.976
footage around…this month the collection will be increased dramatically
and some special surprises for November should propel it along quite nicely!!

October 6, 2006 at 2:59 am in reply to: Making SD DVD from an HD Sequence

I understand it, there is a gamma shift bug if you compress a file directly from FCP.
That is why I export the entire program first, close FCP and then use compressor.
I have done it both ways and I have seen a difference in the gamma levels…
try a short test…export to compressor directly from FCP and then do the export to .mov
first, close FCP and then render with compressor….
make a test DVD with both files and see if you notice a difference.

  • Usually once your loose your CONTENT folder integrity it is
easier to then try and deal with the .mxf files
    with a PC using Raylight.
The new P2 import with 5.1.2 is SWEEET…
    well worth the upgrade.
I just imported 7 P2 cards and was able to pre-edit.
Plus you can import just the video.
This will save even more time in the edit bay….
Shane: time to do another tutorial!
    Thanks
