I am trying to import some P2 files from a Lacie drive and have had some luck and not so much luck. I am hoping that this simply extends from inexperience as I am new convert to FCP from Avid. Anyway…

    fyi… I am working on FCP 5.1.2

There were three folders on the drive
    1. previous shoot which works just fine. the extension on those files were all .MXF
    2. current shoot, 60fps – loaded only after I went into the Lacie and I added the appropriate sub-folders. ie – “CONTENTS”, “PROXY”, “VIDEO”, etc…
    3. current shoot part 2 – no sub folders and all clips end w/ .dv extension.

I tried building a new set of folders as I did earlier and simply changed the extension to .MXF on a copy of one of the .dv clips. This did not work. I also created all of the appropriate folders that FCP would look for. All that happens is the P2 import adds the folder to the queue but does not recognize the folder inside.

PLEASE HELP! any advice would be much appreciated.

You need to follow the workflow I laid out in this tutorial to properly import P2 footage into FCP.

although the interface is a bit different, as I made it for FCP 5.0.4.

    Hey,

I saw a reference to your tutorial just after I posted and found it quite helpful. Thanks.

I am definitely missing the last text file and all of the icons.

Interesting that on the folder with all the 60fps footage (mentioned as item #2 in my first post) there was no last text file and those files imported regardless. Odd.

Another question… why would the other folder have only files with the .dv extension? Is that because it is missing the last text file? Should they have been converted in the camera? Does FCP convert them?

I am meeting a great deal of resistance from the camera tech who does not want to meet up and re-export the files, so I would like to know as much as possible to engage in an educated discourse with her.

Again, I know that these are beginner questions… but I am a new convert to FCP and it’s been a tough road getting away from thinking like an Avid editor.

    Thanks again.

Usually once your loose your CONTENT folder integrity it is
easier to then try and deal with the .mxf files
    with a PC using Raylight.
The new P2 import with 5.1.2 is SWEEET…
    well worth the upgrade.
I just imported 7 P2 cards and was able to pre-edit.
Plus you can import just the video.
This will save even more time in the edit bay….
Shane: time to do another tutorial!
    Thanks

The “.dv” extentiom is prtty scary, as the firestore does indeed record DV RAW stream. Hope you didn’t do that!

    Hi,

It sounds to me like the files from the P2 card weren’t properly saved. In other words, it’s not an FCP issue, but a P2 issue. FWIW, I also came from Avid to FCP, and FCP is much easier than Avid.

Search this forum and look for comments on how to import P2 and P2 files that are recorded. Shane’s tutorial is the definitive word on the subject of P2 ingest, but there are comments from Jan Livingston from Panasonic that might shed light on other aspects of your problem.

Basically, the structure of the data on the P2 card MUST remain intact for ingest. If you have to monkey around with files you have done something wrong. And this is what I would tell the camera tech. Was it she who copied the files? If so, she may have done it wrong. What is her experience with P2?

When I shoot, I save the full amount of data from the P2 card to a laptop in its own folder, taking care to make no changes. I reformat the card and then record the next scene. Then that P2 card’s complete set of data gets saved to another folder, and the process continues.

And the .dv thing is a mystery to me. I wonder if some program on whatever computer you are using got hold of the media and did that? Sometimes computer apps will read files and think they’re helping you by changing the extension. I dunno, though; just a wild guess.

Let us know what happened. I’m curious, myself.

    Hi again,

see if this post helps. when i read it, it had me wondering if your P2 files hadn’t been accessed already on another NLE, perhaps an Avid – especially as regards the .dv files. Did someone export files trying to help you?

Jan mentions that in some situations files may need to be accessed on a PC Avid. read the whole post for more.

    good luck.
