    Hi, Pedro

You can close them as you would any other window, by clicking on the red button in the upper left-hand corner of the window.

To get them back, it’s Cmd-1 for the Viewer and Cmd-2 for the Canvas.

    Good luck!

    Hi, Elizabeth

If you’re not comfortable with MPEG Streamclip–a marvelous AND free program–there is an alternative. You can simply drag your Flip clips onto your QuickTime Player and File>Export>Movie to DV Stream or Movie to QuickTime Movie (and then select Options>Video: Settings>Compression Type:DV/DVPRO-NTSC).

    Hi, Erin

Not my area of expertise, but I’m sure the experts would like to know which program you used to make the graphics that were blurry. (And I’m guessing the experts will recommend Photoshop, but I could be wrong.)

May 20, 2009 at 4:33 pm in reply to: Pal Conversion

    Hi, Carlo

I’ve never done this myself, but I’ve looked into it. The two primary options are hardware or software. The hardware is expensive to purchase, but many post-houses who have invested in it offer standards conversion as a service. If you have the time and money, you might find someone who can do this for you.

As for software, if you are willing to spend some money, Graham Nattress makes a standards conversion plug-in which many folks recommend.

    https://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconversion.htm

If you are comfortable with Compressor, I think you can accomplish this by selecting Settings>Apple>Other Workflows>Advanced Format Conversions>Apple Codecs>Apple ProRes 422 for Interlaced Material (High Quality). Apply that to your clip, then in the Inspector window, select the Frame Controls icon. Turn Frame Controls ON and go down to the Retiming Control.

See the Compressor User Manual, Chapter 20, page 264 “Using Retiming Control” and then ask someone more knowledgeable than me!

    Good luck.

You might contact Ben Daube, one of the most resourceful video guys I know (also one of the nicest and most helpful). If he can’t do it for you, he will know who can.

May 6, 2009 at 9:01 pm in reply to: Many Boris 3D questions

    Hi, Leonard

I’m a long-time Boris user, going back to the days of Media 100 (which didn’t have its own CG or compositing capabilities). Maybe not a “power user”, but I can help with some of the basics.

First off, Title 3D is essentially the same product as Boris Graffiti, so you might get the best advice from posting questions at the Cow’s BorisFX forum. Boris Yamnitsky answers questions there from time to time himself. (Yes, there really is a Boris!)

    As for your specific questions:

    1) I don’t think you can cause automatic updates to occur in the way you are suggesting. The easiest solution is not to correct each one, but to correct the first one, then copy and paste (or use the Replace function) for each subsequent occurrence. The solution is more about how to use Final Cut than Boris, per se.

    2) To give different CGs different names, you have to make them independent of one another. Again, this is a Final Cut thing, rather than a Boris thing. There are a variety of ways to accomplish this. Control-click on the clip in the timeline, select “Make Independent Clip” and then drag it to the bin. If it’s already in the bin, Control-click and select “Duplicate as New Master Clip”. Sometimes simply dragging it to the bin causes a “Making Master Clip” message to appear.

    3) As above, if you make a new clip from an old one with something new added, you’ll need to make it independent of the old clip.

    4) Justification. I don’t think you can actually do this. I think Title 3D only justifies entire pages. The solution here is to make a separate title of each item that requires different justification and then stack them or nest them. (Or invest in Boris Red which permits multiple layers in a single clip.)

    5) Line spacing: The Leading adjustment should apply to all the lines you have selected. Highlight two out of three and it only adjusts two. Select all of them and it should work as you expect.

    6) Good question. Don’t know that I’ve ever had occasion to do this in Final Cut. Have you tried pressing the button marked “Import File” at the bottom of the text editing window?

    7) Backgrounds? Um, what makes you think there are backgrounds?

    Hope that’s somewhat helpful.

    Good luck!

March 23, 2009 at 9:07 pm in reply to: Backups

    Hi, Wayne

I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I guess I hadn’t thought out my question completely. I’m not just interested in what media you use for backups, but also in how folks like you actually organize all the data you’re backing up.

I understand that some folks are simply copying their project media files to external hard drives, but once you have 10 or 15 TB of footage on the shelf, how do you locate any particular file that you might have a new use for?

For years, I backed up Media 100 projects with Mezzo and Retrospect. Mezzo allowed me to restore just the media contained in a specific bin or timeline. If I could identify a particular file that I needed, Retrospect would tell me which exactly AIT or DLT tape to pull out of the cabinet and load into the tape drive, so that it could then restore the specific shot or logo or VO I needed direct to my media drive.

So that’s my question, if I have media backed up to external HD or DVDs, how do I find the files I want to restore?

(Maybe I’ll rephrase my question and post it under a better Subject line.)

    Thanks!

    Thanks, Dave.

We’re exploring that option as well. The client actually wants HDV, so we’ll probably rent a Sony Z1U. But my boss wants me to explore options that involve the expenditure of my time, rather than any additional funds.

    I appreciate your input.

March 4, 2009 at 6:40 pm in reply to: help rememebring keyboard shortcuts

There are a couple of solutions.

For free, make up your own shortcuts! You can re-map the keyboard to combinations that you can easily remember (Tools>Keyboard Layout>Customize).

If you willing to spend some money, get a customized keyboard. They come in various styles, at varying expense. There are keyboards with custom keycaps, as well as keyboard covers (these keep your keyboard clean) or keycap stickers (not recommended). Check out Logickeyboards.com or kbcovers.com. You can buy a “map” of the keyboard shortcuts from neotrondesign.com. Or just Google “Final Cut keyboard shortcuts” and you find various lists you keep handy until you memorize them.

    Good luck!
